History

Founded in 1946, Australian National University has been a leading university located in Australia’s capital city of Canberra. The school’s original academic mission was directed only towards postgraduates, but by 1960 the University integrated with Canberra University College to provide courses for undergraduate as well. Today, Australian National University is one of the top school in the entire nation, being ranked first in Australia by the 2018 QS World University Rankings. Because of its prestige, it receives funding from the government and from private enterprises. Because of that, they give generous Australian National University Scholarships to international students.

 

Students and Faculty

The number of undergraduate and postgraduate is well balanced at ANU, with more than 10,000 students in each category. The most well regarded academic programs are in the arts and sciences, but students at Australian National University have the opportunity to pursue a wide variety of subjects, especially in fields relating to global importance such as geography, international relations, social policy, but there are a total of 7 colleges to choose from. More than 3,750 staff support the research and learning objectives of the university.

 

Campuses

The main campus is located in Acton, a suburb just west of central Canberra, and sprawls across 358 acres. Dedicated to environmental sustainability, the school has been recognized for its incorporation of over 10,000 trees on campus. There are additional campus locations including the Kioloa campus in New South Wales, a research center in Darwin, and the Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories.

 

Endowment

In local Australian, currency, the university endowment was reported as high as $1.13 billion. One particular generous donation stemmed from former ANU student Graham Tuckwell, a financial entrepreneur who donated $50m for scholarship opportunities.

 

Alumni

Graduates from Australian National University go on to find tremendous success in a variety of fields, counting 6 Nobel Laureates and 49 Rhodes Scholars among its alumni and research faculty. Two of Australia’s former Prime Ministers, Kevin Rudd and Bob Hawke, studied at Australian National University, along with several judges, CEOs, and other prominent individuals.
