Read: Life at the Arctic Coworking Lodge
The Lofoten Islands in itself is a special part of Norway, it's raw, mountainous landscape and quaint environment that offers an endless amount of beauty, hikes, beaches and surfing waves. Arctic Coworking Lodge is a 15 minute drive from Leknes Airport or en route along the 3.5 hour scenic bus ride from Evenes Airport (Harstad / Narvik).
I was immediately drawn to the beautiful mountain peaks that make up the backdrop on arrival to the Arctic Coworking Lodge. Defiant in the distance at 962m at its peak, the ocean waters fill the void for a scenic visual that changes everyday, and one I had come to admire each and every day staying at the lodge. The plethora of mountains, hills, hikes and routes make Tangstad a well-served location to explore near and far that can fill up your calendar for weeks.
The main areas are the communal living room and kitchen, an open space that is transparent to feel inclusive and feel spacious, while the hallway cuts through to separate it from the kitchen, which serves for all the cooking and dining nicely. After more than 6 weeks at the Arctic Coworking Lodge, it's easy to say I felt right at home. And you kind of want that feeling as a co-living space, especially for longer periods of time.
I felt welcomed from the moment I walked-in, invited and a part of the Arctic Coworking Lodge community. There's this sense of belonging and family that bonds people together, yet respects everyone's individual schedules, task-lists, interests and space. The furniture and interior is a mix of vintage, nature and warm colours that build that atmosphere, with a solid kitchen facility that is contemporary, but personal.
In Tangstad, noise is never an issue. The surrounding waters and mountains often means peaceful, quiet and calm evenings that I've been always able sleep well, every day. Being by the ocean there are very gusty days especially around this time of the year, however it's usually been warm inside the Arctic Coworking Lodge.
The Cabins have that Norwegian style to it, with the panels, colours and wooden frames, which captures the place well. I can say that they are well-built and sturdy, with no creaky noises, the mattress are soft and very comfortable, retaining heat well. The privacy curtains are simple and does the job, to keep light out and some privacy in the dorm rooms.
The rooms themselves are spacious, with plenty of floor space, two bright windows, hanging racks and small storage pockets that are freely usable. I found the table useful for when I want to zone in on work in my own space. Overall, very happy and enjoyed sleeping in the dorm room.
That leads me onto the Arctic Coworking Lodge workspace nicely - it benefits from a lot of natural light from outside, offering 6 hotdesking seats with cushioned chairs. You can drop in and work from any seat available, for the whole day or just a few moments. The power sockets tend to be by the walls so you'll have to run your laptop charger from it but of no concern.
A whiteboard hugs against the wall on the right, usually a great weekly tracker to plan out your week and actions for the days, which I found useful and a great way to plan out the week coinciding with others. A simple workspace, but a place I found I can be very productive, surrounded by others in the same mindset. Plenty of working space for each person, it offers a better setup when there are days you just have to sit down and get work done. And I like that.
Two internet connections are offered which covers the Arctic Coworking Lodge well in all rooms, sufficient for multiple users. This will be enhanced to super-fast fibre connection that caters to heavy traffic heavy media, creators and digitally-dependent individuals, boding well for a consistent, robust online experience.
I find the kitchen one of the several strengths of the Arctic Coworking Lodge - it's super spacious with the long tabletop, countless drawers for everyone to store their food and sufficient fridge space for fresh food. It's easy to cook alongside others cooking for dinner, while the washing machine is handy for those busy workdays.
I've worked from the table a few times when I wanted a change from the workspace and living room, as freely usable to suit your workflow with consideration for others.
What makes the Arctic Coworking Lodge a unique co-living, coworking space is the access to mountains and waves. You'll love the place if surfing is your thing, with Rolf and Stian avid enthusiasts of surfing and a friendly surfing community here. Unstad beach is just 5 minutes away with scenic landscapes and trails in between so if you're a photographer, surfer, hiker, videographer, runner or digital traveller, then Arctic Coworking Lodge serves as a perfect place to bring all of that together.
After heading back from the beach, the large dry room offers a place to freshen up, washing and dry your clothes. A washing machine, tumble dryer and hanging rack are included as part of the co-living experience. Very useful for regular adventures out. There's a smaller bathroom with shower upstairs in the hallway too.
Geared for an outdoor lifestyle, there's an external sheltered room that are dedicated to storing surfboards, hanging wetsuits and such which is a big plus. I didn't use it personally since I don't surf (I know, I'll get to it one day), but is very useful when you think how difficult it is to accommodate those elsewhere.
A recently opened co-living space and the only of its kind in Tangstad, Lofoten, the Arctic Coworking Lodge has created a unique set of charms that embraces the stunning surroundings within the area, built an inclusive ambiance and atmosphere that makes it difficult for people like myself want to leave, offering a well-thought experience inside and out.
As an adventurer, creator and active individual, I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here and impressed at what Rolf & Stian have created with the Arctic Coworking Lodge. It's the first of its kind in this part of Lofoten, which will no doubt attract more attention and visitors over the years that come. If you're looking into co-living places to settle down for a period of time in Lofoten, you'll enjoy many aspects of what Arctic Coworking Lodge has to offer, much like I have.
