Simply put, SteemPress is a plugin for any WordPress blog that will allow you to cross-post and store your content to the steem blockchain. It also allows for a two-way integration of comments between your WordPress blog and the steem blockchain.
Being the mind reader that I am, your next question is going to be, ‘Paula, what is the steem blockchain?’ Right? Well, there is no need to reinvent the wheel to answer that question because I covered steem and the steem blockchain in this post: What is steem?
And I have also covered reasons why you as a WordPress user and blogger should be using SteemPress in this post: 7 Amazing Benefits of SteemPress for WordPress Users.
So really, all we need to talk about is signing up, installing the app and a few other small details.
Signing up with SteemPress and Steem.
To use SteemPress you need to have a steem account/wallet. Wallets can be obtained in a few ways. However, I would suggest you take the following route.
Use this link to sign up directly. The SteemPress team will review your blog and if you meet their criteria, they will set you up with a free steem account. And they will send you a link to download the plugin for your website.
There are other ways to get a steem account and start using the SteemPress plugin, but I would suggest this as the preferred route. The team will help you get set up. And as if your content is good, they will engage with your publications and you might even earn upvotes from them.
If the team do not approve your blog, let me know and we can get you set up another way.
SteemPress Plugin
Once you have touched base with the team, and they approve your blog, they will send you a link to the SteemPress plugin.
You will need to download the plugin and once downloaded you will need to activate it.
Upon activation, under settings, you will now have SteemPress setting.
The most important details in the SteemPress setting are the fields Steem Username and Posting Private Key. These are details from your wallet. Make sure you hit save when you enter them. Everything else relates to the user preference setting which we will cover in a different article.
You will know you are connected to the blockchain by scroll to the bottom of the SteemPress Options page where you will find details on the connection.
Costs Involved
An account and a wallet issued by SteemPress will cost you nothing. However, if you’re publication earns steem rewards, there is a 15% fee. If you have no reward earning, its not a problem. You can still use SteemPress at no cost.
There are costs involved in using the blockchain for posting, commenting and voting. However, these are not money costs, and are covered by having like a ‘deposit’ of steem in your wallet. The SteemPress team will work with you to ensure there is a minimum deposit to transact on the block when they set up your account. That makes getting started simple and free.
If you blog a lot and engage with your followers in your comments often then you may have to increase this deposit. It's not really called a deposit either, but as you can get it back, I look at it in that way! On steem it's known as Steem Power, which is steem tokens you stake in the platform for a minimum of 13 weeks. These steem tokens you can buy, or you can earn on as rewards.
Is SteemPress anything else?
SteemPress is also a community, providing support, content, and opportunities for steemPress users.
Soon the official website will also be a content discovery platform, showcasing authors that have published with their app. The road map indicates an upcoming community, contests, gamification and much much more. SteemPress is a rather new product and blogging on the blockchain is innovative. This is the beginning of the future of the web and a community you can have a real stake in.

Thanks so much for this, Paula.
I have to set up a new non-Steemit blog and have been looking on and off for a comprehensive Steempress tutorial I can follow step by step when I'm ready.
Bless you!!!

Hey, @paulag
As usual a great post. I am hoping to start the "conversion" process with two of my blogpals here in South Africa, but my concern is that - in one case any way - she uses a free WP site. In my experience, if one's site is self-hosted and is on the WP platform, then one has access to the plugin. Or if one has a premium package. Before I moved to my current domain, I used a basic WP hosted domain and had no access to the plugin. It was a major factor behind my stopping my WP subscription and going the self-hosted route. As well as the economics associated with it.
I am hoping that this situation has changed and am tagging @howo and @fredrikaa to potentially answer this question.
