Disconnect in a Connected World

in steempress •  6 years ago  (edited)

I was watching a recent episode of Madam Secretary, one of the shows I do enjoy watching. This particular episode involved some intrigue around the acquisition of a new fighter jet. We learn right at the start of the episode from one of the main characters this jet has some great bells and whistles but flying it is like trying to fly a brick.

The Secretary of Defence is made aware of this design flaw early on but after all, there has been years of work and millions spent on this choice, so throughout the show, the Secretary of Defence repeatedly makes the comment, “at the end of the day, it’s a really great jet”.

The disconnect between the reality of what the jet was and what the Secretary of Defence wanted it to be was stunning. I rather expect it was a deliberate part of the plot considering what seems to be way too common in the world right now.

The disconnect between what is claimed and what is real is widespread.

You’d think in a connected world that reasonably intelligent people would be discerning enough to search out and verify facts rather than simply choosing to believe what they choose to believe. The disconnects are everywhere.

My eldest brother is a pretty smart cookie for the most part. One subject the two of us need to be careful discussing is politics. He has a decidedly far right take on politics. In order to support his choices he needs to declare the mainstream media as being total fake news and his far right news sites as being the one true source of truth. Sounds like some religious faiths.

I can agree with him to a point, the mainstream media does exhibit bias that maybe wasn’t as present years ago. It is important to seek out more than one source on a news story to get past any bias the reporter may have. Generally the bias is more in the tone of the story than the substance of the facts.

I actually prefer to go to more than one source for the different angles and levels of depth on a story to get a fuller picture. My brother will only go to his ‘trusted’ source. The source that meets his worldview. The disconnect between his ability to discern and think critically and his desire to have the news match his worldview never fails to amaze me.

In a local organization I’m part of, there is an individual who has given years of service to the group. Some newer people to the group have taken a dislike to this person and has worked to try and push the person out. When confronted with the facts of what the person has done for the good of the organization, the naysayers simply choose to not hear or acknowledge the facts. They will disconnect from the facts in order to hold onto their own view.

Disconnects and the willingness of others to take part in them without question can lead to some pretty serious consequences. I’m looking south of the border to a government partially shut down, thousands out of work and ever increasing damage to the operation of the country and the economy over a President demanding a wall that no agency has ever recommended.

Now isn’t that a disconnect!

"Disconnects and the willingness of others to take part in them without question can lead to some pretty serious consequences." Absolutely. It's so easy to just follow some opinion, and so difficult to find out the 'truth'. Maybe it's too difficult with so many choices, so much time needed to invest in everything, that many people just give up? I've noticed this on both sides of the Atlantic. It's sad, thanks for bringing it up.

people are people and sometimes it really doesn't matter which side of the pond they are on, they seem to find it a chore to seek truth.

Excellent comment @nobyeni

that disconnect, evidenced by the Sec of Defense character, is one that is based in reality.
Often, the major military projects are more about the spending than the actual product.

sadly that doesn't surprise me ... defense is a huge lobby area and a lot of money at play.

I remember reading this article back in August... it is disturbing the trends that appear to be emerging. They are not taking anyone in a good direction

I think that's how people move through this world holding extreme positions.... there HAS to be a disconnect. hehehe or .... they would have an "aha" moment

i still have hopes that those moments will come along! :)

I expect there are some individuals who have those moments. We need a critical mass of them to start moving back toward a centered collective mindset.

It is interesting that we can connect to so much information, to so many different viewpoints, and still people will return to their 'trusted' news sources and everything else is biased or fake.

It happens on both sides of the spectrum, from left to right and the pendulum swings back and forth. Two sides remaining disconnected.

thankfully there are extremes on both ends of the spectrum or we'd end up with a huge tilt. People seem to need their comfort zone regardless of what sand it may be built on.

Very true.

I tend to view the world through both sides of the coin. Having opposing views is not necessarily bad - often times they lead to awareness and growth. I think the problem comes in when we filter the truth through the human mind - it's bound to get distorted because we 'all' carry some bias and opinion.

I think people could improve more on their listening of others' views along with a little more diplomacy and problem solving. This has largely become obsolete in our modern society - I often cringe at comments I read. Not pretty. Circular arguments never end nor amount to answers or resolutions ;) IMHO

Personally, I don't trust corporate news any longer. I can't tell you how many headlines and articles I've read that upset me enough to research for myself only to find out that the information was either completely false or sprinkled with half truths. I miss the days of true investigative journalism and the protections of the Smith Mundt Act against propaganda.

Dear @youhavewings

Great comment buddy. Indeed it's very hard to trust corporate news any more. I cannot think of times when people would share so much distrust towards mass media.

So true, @crypto.piotr Very important to have an aware and educated public.

Excellent treatise on disconnects! I, too, have a brother who leans in the opposite direction of my leanings, so I can definitely relate!

Lack of critical thinking skills is an epidemic.

Dear @shadowspub

Excellent choice of topic. Great read.

The disconnect between the reality of what the jet was and what the Secretary of Defence wanted it to be was stunning

Indeed. This is such a great example we shold all consider and think about.

I’m looking south of the border to a government partially shut down, thousands out of work and ever increasing damage to the operation of the country and the economy over a President demanding a wall that no agency has ever recommended.

I presume that you're not very supportive to idea of building this wall?

Piotr

Not at all supportive but it's not my country to make a decision in.

That said, the disconnect is the fact Trump has promoted the concept of a wall to a certain part of his support base. The notion is not backed up by those who work in those fields as something which will benefit the country's security. He now has the government in partial shutdown demanding funding because there is clearly not the political will for the project due to the lack of operational support.

He needs to learn that governing a country is not running your own corporation where your own agenda trumps (no pun intended) that of the rest of the government. In the meantime, thousands are either out of work or working without pay while he throws his childish temper tantrum.

Appreciate your mature and reasonable comment @shadowspub

He needs to learn that governing a country is not running your own corporation where your own agenda trumps

Very wise words. It's clear power struggle and I understand that he cannot back down. If he would then he would lose his support base. And with his amount of powerful enemies it would be very difficult not to be crushed if that happens.

I wont get into topic much deaper as it's to close to sensitive politics :)

So true! Multiple research is so important in order to reach the best information... if one out of seven are on one side of the fence and one on the other, well then, it should be obvious and time for rethinking! But there are always those who are not open to seeing, or rather they may be but with their eyes wide shut!!

Sad about the person in your organization....People tend to forget that those with experience are also wise 😉

South of the border, all I can say is that I am glad he is not living on our side of the line.

South of the border, all I can say is that I am glad he is not living on our side of the line.

Sadly the mindset that he brings to the table is creeping into this country. We already have a premier in one province with a similar mindset and one of the federal party leaders is not much better. The fact they can get elected means there are too many of the electorate with a similar disconnect.

This is true ..... although, at this point, I can’t help but compare the Trump to past maniacal leaders, and that is scary considering he does have his loyal followers and when it further escalates to the general population the forecast looks bleak for sure 🙁

Fortunately, there are a few non-sheeple such as yourself who are able to at least identify and see the need to learn more. Also the case that we are being sold on things using "feelings" instead of just being given the obvious facts so people can maybe be on the same page for a change.

The disconnect is amazing and real. One of the very few people I can legitimately discuss matters of opposing views with is my brother. We each trust the other to not participate in the bullshit and to not take the opinions personally. It's a RARE situation for me today.

The FA 35. I have some knowledge of the example aircraft. It's been in full operation for more than 2 years but is not fully operational anyplace. It's not a 'great aircraft' by any stretch and still they keep on coming. At a staggering cost per plane. All of them are airworthiness certified here in Yuma, AZ (MCAS). It took a long time to get the first four certified, they had to change the wording before they would qualify....

I once chaired a campaign for a Democrat (Land Commissioner in WA State) as a registered Republican. That was 40 years ago, but I wouldn't even consider that sort of crossover today. (And let the record show that I would be crossing the other way now) The integrity of the entire world seems to have disappeared.

Thanks for this outlook. I think :)
