Will blockchain social media catch on in a big way, becoming the wave of the future?
As I pointed out in a comment to John Fruehe’s answer, blockchain already has a place in social media and online content delivery because of its value as the basis of a peer-to-peer infrastructure of information and value transfer and social relationships that is censorship resistant and enabling peer-to-peer ownership and control.
How big this will be is too early to tell. It should be noted, though, that the cost of deploying a blockchain for social media applications is less than most people think. There is no need to run a proof-of-work consensus algorithm. Delegated-Proof-of-Stake is perfectly adequate as the Steem blockchain demonstrates.
What I think is likely to succeed is hybrid applications that use a blockchain where that offers the most value and centralized or other type of decentralized options where a blockchain is does not provide value.
