What is the point of moving Steem or SBD over to the savings area?

The aim of the savings area of the Steem wallet is security. There is no other real benefit of moving Steem or SBD into this area.

However this aim is worthwhile in itself. There is no 2FA on the Steem blockchain and if you accidentally post your active key into an article or comment (easily done if you are copy-pasting the key for a transfer to a bid-bot for example) then there are hacker-bots that will immediately transfer out all of your liquid Steem and SBD. Recently there are also white-hat bots that will seek to protect your account through a similar process to the hacker-bots but this protection is not perfect.

So if you are holding a large amount of liquid Steem or SBD, for example because you do not want to keep your funds on an exchange, then the savings area is a good idea. It takes three days to withdraw your funds from the area so that allows you three days to go through the recovery process if your account is hacked.

An alternative is to hold your Steem in SP, since this takes thirteen weeks (thirteen one week periods) to power down, so also affords a similar withdrawal protection, plus the benefits of the revenue from voting. Which you prefer depends on your desired liquidity for your Steem currency.
