Today I'm taking a look at two large coins from my collection the 1 kg 2019 Somalia elephant and the 1 kg 2017 Congo silverback gorilla. Each of them contains a massive 32.1507 troy ounces of precious silver. If you want a closer look at those coins keep on reading.

1 kg Silver Somalia Elephant 2019
The latest issue of the African 1kg Wildlife Elephant
Let's get started with this Somalian giant from the savanna. The Somalian Elephant is part of the African Wildlife series and is issued by the Somali Republic. But they are minted very far from home, by the Bavarian State Mint. A very old mint known for high-quality mintage.
There's some controversy whether the Somali Republic issued these coins, or whether they are coins at all. But in my opinion, the Bavarian State Mint wouldn't tarnish their reputation by doing something illegal. By shunning those coins because of this controversy, you are missing out on a beautiful series.
Back of the 2019 Elephant
The coin measures 101 mm (3.976 inches) in diameter and weighs 1 kg. On the front, you can see an elephant walking through the Somali savanna. The back features the coat of arms of the Somali Republic and the denomination of 2000 Somali Shilling. Aside from the 1 kg coin, there are also 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2oz, 5 oz and 10 oz versions of the silver coin. It also comes in a gold version available from 1/50 to 1 oz.
As you can see, the Bavarian State Mint did a great job in creating an almost proof like finish. I love the way they rendered all those details and made the 2019 elephant into such a beautiful coin.
1 kg 2017 Silverback Gorilla
First and to my knowledge only 1 kg gorilla
Right from the heart of Africa, we have the next coin. The mighty Congo silverback gorilla. The 2017 edition is the first coin of the series to be minted as a 1 kg coin. They had a mintage of 5000 coins and were minted by the Scottsdale Mint for the Republic of Congo.
Back of the silverback gorilla
The front of the coin features a mighty gorilla in front of a jungle background. The back shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Congo and the denomination of 10,000.00 central African Franc. The silverback gorilla is also available as a 1 oz version.
The motive itself is very impressive, but in my opinion, the frosted finish of the gorilla lacks in contrast. It is difficult to make out details in the fur in normal lighting, which detracts from the overall appeal of the coin.
The minting quality is not as good as the elephant; some of the details are a bit rough, as you can see in the large closeup of the front. Aside from this, I'd say the coin is still worth it and an exciting series to keep an eye on.
Hope you enjoyed the closer look at those two coins. What do you think about those two entries from each series?
A great start, nice layout of this article, with good pictures and concise information.
I started out learning the Coding first long before my first post too.

Nice Kilo silverback I just posted about the 1oz but a Kilo would be sick! That is some serious weight to your stack right there.

Thanks :D
The one 1 oz version looks also very cool. I think the gorilla looks a bit better on the 1 oz coin.

You can say that, 64 ounces in total, pretty big coins. But that's what you need dragons for, protection and all ;)

Really nice. I stack too, but mostly just silver rounds, not numismatic silver.
The gorilla is amazing

Thanks :) I stack mostly low premium coins with the occasional, numismatic piece. But I just couldn't pass those two up.

Nice. Fyi Ive really been enjoying your posts. Great work. Keep it up.
If you ever get some steem and want to delegate, so you can get upvotes and give ups to like minded people, I think youd be a great fit in @ssg-community.
We post on Steem silver and gold, and other stuff too, but some of us delegate to the bot and it upvotes us greater than our selfvote would allow anyways.

It's great to hear that you like my posts. I hope I can keep creating interesting content :)
About the ssg-community: silversaver888 said she nominated me for the group. I don't know a whole lot about steemit yet or how delegating works. Edit: so, as far as I understand the ssg-community is an upvote bot for steem silver gold members who support the bot ?

One KILO! Holy moly! I have never seen a coin this size. Under 4 inches in diameter seems smaller than I would have imagined. Still that is huge.
Excellent stuff.

Thanks :) Yes, they are pretty big coins. I can hardly fit them in my hand. It's pretty crazy that there are even larger coins like 5kg or 15 kg coins...
