A Jolly Good Morning to all you lovely SSG peoples
As some of you may know I decided recently to try my hand at making some silver art, all this lovely shinyness is just so inspiring :) I kept seeing silver pretty stuff and thinking 'oooh I could make ......' add in a zillion ideas to that phrase and you got me all day long :)
So I invested what funds I had in some rudimentary equipment and a tiny bit of silver, 7 g to be exact, and proceeded to make my own pendant for a necklace.
You see I love the idea of art being functional. In the past I have designed tshirts with my art on the front , they sold well on ebay, however the equipment needed was expensive, but though I have sold paintings and many other things I have made, I loved making hats for a while, I had never worked with silver. Silver I realised, was a wonderful way of making functional art.
7g doesn't go very far..........is the first lesson I have learned :) I have also learned that you cannot go too thin..... I kind of got a little enthusiastic with the polishing, before that I had been a little too happy with the sanding, sooooooo I learned that if you make a pendant too thin and then sand and polish it to high heaven you going to break your heart.....
This design I had planned in my head for the last week or so, since I discovered it was possible for me to play with silver :) I knew I wanted a necklace, I knew I wanted a representation of me surrounded by money and love, satisfy all my feng shui needs :) so I designed and made the face, and the hearts....
I found a chain and made jump rings....
I found some tiny silver coins........
then when my pieces were fired I polished like a very obsessed polishing thing.......and made this.........
I still only have the most basic and not quite complete kit, I ran out of silver....and it's tiny.......only weighs about 5 g at most....and the broken heart was supposed to sit above the face, ........but.....it's my first pure silver 999 piece of art and I have loved every minute of creating my first tiny piece of silver art, I am happy with the result of the design , though it is not quite to what I wanted I know exactly how to get it right next time, so soon as I can I shall be getting more silver, a much bigger amount this time, and I learned I prefer to work tiny and delicate, but silver is preferred when chunky, so I have to work out how to create the designs I want and still have them translate well into a more solid model. I do love this new adventure!
i have had a most excellent day, and i hope you have an excellent day too
a quick edit to show you a little video of it but it is not the best quality, hopefully you can see the pattern on the surface of the pieces, it would show better if I antiqued it, as soon as I can I will invest in antiqueing stuff :)
sorry it's on the side !

Very good! Remember that it was the first time and that you have a long way to run, but you will reach your goals.

thank you, admittedly the mistakes i made were basic but i have spent the afternoon researching and learning, seems sterling silver is whats used mostly for jewellery on account of it being stronger, but i prefer fine silver and the finer the better, as i will be spending some time making stuff i will put on ebay i have decided to make that from sterling silver and concentrate on the more arty pieces in fine, i am aiming to work up to working in gold so its good for me to learn in silver and make my mistakes in that first :) mistakes are expensive though and serve to make me learn quicker :) thank you for visiting and for your kind words i appreciate the encouragement as i am really enjoying this new experience and really want to make a go of it, just need some actual silver to play with :) ah well tomorrow i can order some :) hope you have an excellent day much respect to you always my friend

Should I ever get large swaths of free time I'd certainly get into creating Silver art but for now I'm gonna have to get someone to do it for me.

Did you make this with PMc3 silver clay? I always had problems with that stuff breaking when thin, great work you will perfect it in the end :-)

hiya i used prometheus, i mentioned in an earlier post i think i am unable to do pouring as such i have two arms but one of them is just there to even up my look :) my right arm, no problem good arm that, performs most arm functions quite well :) my left arm, well like i said its there, it can hold stuff , sometimes, as far as arms go its the right arm that satisfies the concept of what an arm should do :) hence the lifting and pouring of dangerous hot and expensive metals the operating of hot furnaces etc all these things are not for a skinny woman with one good arm, so i turned to prometheus but as i have said to another i would not reccomend it as it is very expensive and its only really a last resort , i am working on other ideas as well though, i am learning engraving as that is a good way of being able to get my detailed designs onto silver and i have been watching videos on using torches etc though so far it is still not really a viable option, prometheus is good except it is difficult to work with and limited and very expensive, i pay around £25 per 10 gms andit only gets slightly cheaper if i buy more, its saving grace is the fact that i can physcially use it, big bonus there, and that it lends itself well to working with my own designs though the skull the tiny one was using a mould it also has to have very definite temps and firing times the brittleness comes from not being sintered i have learned that through experience :) generally as a product i cannot recommend it but i am happy to use it in my present situation. again thank you for chatting nice to meet someone who is happy to listen to me waffle on about my passion for silver, and you have left me the most lovely comments i appreciate that i hope i havent missed any my full respect to you
