The Coin That Started It All

in steemsilvergold •  5 years ago  (edited)

Hello Steemians!

So, as some of you may know, I have recently come down with a severe case of Stackitus. I believe I may have caught this hanging out on the SSG discord channel and from my sis @saffisara...

But the coin that started it all for me... is this lovely Morgan silver dollar. This is the first bit of silver I parted with some money for, as I simply couldn't resist. At the time, I didn't know anything about it... I just loved the feel of it.

As you can see it's a 1879 coin. I set out to do a bit of research on it. They were minted from 1878 to 1904 and also in the year 1921. I now feel the burning need to start by collecting a full date set.

The other thing I learned was that this coin was minted in Philadelphia. The way to tell this is the minting mark. On this one, there isn't one... and that means Phily. The place to look is in that second photo- at the bottom centre of the wreath there's a ribbon. Just below that you'd see the mark.

The different marks are;
S = San Francisco
O = New Orleans
D = Denver
No Mark = Philadelphia
CC = Carson City.

The Carson City ones are the rarest and therefore the most valuable.

Pretty cool huh?!

I'd like to know how much weight of silver one of these fellows holds- so if anyone knows please do leave me a comment!

So there you go... my starter coin for my new obsession... which makes me read things like this as a treat... :)

What got you into your collections?
Catch you soon,
Evie x

Oh Oh! 😁

I always think of you as new pocketchange. But the old stuff fits in there too! My bad. ☺️

Totally in love with this community already! So much knowledge 😀

I probably look new, because I haven't been buying my Up-Votes... I should be a (74), not a (56)... I've been telling people, they're only "Spinning their Wheels" thinking they'll get Rich on Steemit... After the Reset for example, your Account Value will drop from $408 and end up around $4.08... Your "Spending Power" will be about the same, but think of what you could have done with that $408... We're only about 6 weeks away from the U.S. Monetary Reset...

No I meant new coins. Things in circulation today vs. older stuff. Pocket change vs. graded coins bought at a dealer.

Besides the Common U.S. Clad Coinage I write about, I also have very rare Gold and Silver Coinage, but that hasn’t been my main focus lately... I’ve been Stacking longer than most people in the ssg-Community have been alive, and that includes Ray and Damus...

Awesome coin @eveningart!
Here is a list of us coins and their silver content.

And here is more info on the Morgan. ASW=Actual Silver Weight

Thanks so much for the info, that's really kind of you- what a brilliant resource! E x

lol.yes Ma'am. Collecting silver is such a grand adventure and every piece builds your wealth.
What husband wouldn't be thrilled with that? He has to be very fine with your new hobby right?

The Morgan Dollar is a beautiful coin. I personally love the Peace Dollar. But the silver coin that started me stacking is the American Silver Eagle, which forms the base of my stack along with US Constitutional silver and fractional gold! STACK ON, my friend @eveningart. and let us support each other in our journey to save in silver!

I've just looked up the peace dollars- rather beautiful... I'm putting that firmly on my hunting list :) Thanks for sharing- I'm a real newbie so looking forward to learning more. E x

awsome coin

Thanks very much! I'll be souring the local auctions for some Carson minted coins to add to the collection! E x

Carson City Mint Marks are very hard to find... In my younger days, I picked up Roll after Roll of Morgan Dollars at the Bank, searching for C C Mint Marks... I never found any in Circulation, but I have some now... I even have some U.S. Trade Dollars with Carson City Mint Marks...

I should imagine that they'll be even harder to find over here in th UK then! How lovely that you've got some in your collection x
