SilverPornSaturday ~ The Mexican Libertad

in steemsilvergold •  5 years ago  (edited)

When I get the urge to stack some silver, I usually content myself with US dimes, quarters and halves. A recent post by my friend @drutter suggested "scooping up a little cheap physical silver, if you have the means, while things are still relatively quiet."

When I took that suggestion to heart today and dropped by the coin store, there were only two quarters and four halves and no dimes in the case. However, this coin caught my eye. It's a one ounce Mexican Libertad.

Minted by the Casa De Moneda, the oldest mint still in operation in the Americas, these coins were introduced in 1982. The design has changed since then, but the 1982 - 1984 coins I saw today had the Winged Victory statue in front of two Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, and gives the stats: 1 ounce of pure silver 0.999.

The opposite side bears the National Shield of Mexico, and the legend "Estados Unidos Mexicanos", which translates to the United Mexican States.

Not captured too well here, the edge reads: "Independencia Y Libertad", Independence and Liberty.

I paid a couple dollars over spot, and feel happy adding these coins to my collection. I'm going to keep my eye out for more in the future.

This is my first post to SilverpornSaturday, a tag hosted by @silverd510, and to the #steemsilvergold community, but I hope to be back with more.

Yes, the Mexican Libertad is one of my favorites. The Mexican keep the mintages secret at the beginning of the minting and report after the sale. Sometimes very low mintages, to the delight of the buyers. Thanks for sharing, Kunschj.

Thanks for dropping by. I think I read that the mintages for the early 1980's were just over one million each year, much lower than US mintages. I'm really happy I found these now :-)

That Libertad is in great shape for being almost 40 years old. Thanks for sharing that @kunschj.
