Daily Coin # 38 An 1885 P Morgan Dollar in wonderful condition !

in steemsilvergold •  7 years ago  (edited)

Let me begin this post by saying that this coin came to me by way of a good friend from YT, who goes by the handle of A Friend ! This Morgan dollar is by far the best I own .The obvious points are that this coin is made of 90 % silver and weighs in at 26.73 grams , and is 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm thick . So lets begin and see if we can learn a little more of this most iconic American coin . Designed by George T. Morgan, the Morgan dollar was produced from 1878 to 1921. A total mintage of 656,930,590 covers all years . The coin I am showing in today's post was issued from the Philadelphia mint and is common in all grades. The type was struck 1878-1904 and 1921, with the Philadelphia mint participating every year.Recorded mintage for 1885: 17,787,767. The year 1885 is not so special as there are many 1885 morgan silver dollars in circulation but still they are making counterfeit coins in China with this date.
The obverse design for the coin features lady liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap, a wreath, and a headband with the inscription “LIBERTY”. On the outer perimeter are the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (a dot separating each) and 13 stars to represent the original states. Located directly under the neck of Lady Liberty is the designer’s initial “M”.

The reverse features an eagle holding an olive branch in one claw and arrows in the other and directly above the eagle are the words “IN GOD WE TRUST” while directly below the eagle is a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon. On the outer rim are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” as well as two stars separating the two phrases. Located on the left loop ribbon of the wreath is the designer’s initial “M”. A mint mark for New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S), Carson City (CC) or Denver (D) is located just below the ribbon. Coins minted at the Philadelphia mint carried no mint marks such as this coin .

The edge of this awesome coin is of course reeded .
