I found a MULE! the Holy Grail of British 20p Coins!

in steemsilvergold •  7 years ago

Before I started stacking Silver and precious metals I was collecting coins from circulation. It's not as much fun in the UK compared to the USA because all Silver coins have been removed from the currency system. We can however collect the many commemorative designs and error coins of which there are many! @welshstacker has been showing off some of his cupro-nickel so I thought I'd give him some support. The other day I checked my pocket change and found a very rare Error coin. An undated 20pence coin known as a 'mule'. The coin on the Left is the Mule.

The error occurred when they went to change the date from the front to the back of the coin and accidently used the wrong pairing of dies. It is estimated that between 50-200 thousand were released into circulation before the mistake was realised.

They were minted in 2008 and were quickly snapped up by collectors who cherry picked them from bank bags. I have searched thousands of coins and had given up hope of finding one but perseverance pays off They were fetching £100 in mint condition so 500x face value. Prices have fallen due to bad Chinese fakes on eBay, but this one is Real!

This is a picture from the official Royal Mint website showing the 3 variations of the 2008 coin. My coin had gunk all over it so I cleaned it off with a toothpick and then gave it a light polish with a silver polishing cloth. I know it's bad but there aren't many options for cleaning cupro-nickel and it really needed it. It looks a lot better than it did before.

I have lots of error coins that I will show in upcoming posts. Most of them have little value but they are interesting. I might sell this and convert the profit into silver.

Thanks meilo! yeah it was quite exciting for such a little coin :)

That is something I have been doing recently. Checking my change for things like quarters that are majority silver. Great find!

Neat little piece of history you found.

Cheers mate not silver but its worth a few ounces of silver :)

How cool is that! Good eye there brother.

Thanks mate i couldnt believe my eyes had to triple check lol :)

Well keep looking as I still need 1. I'm sure we could come to some sort of financial agreement.

Thanks mate ill keep that in mind im not sure what to do yet it was a great find but i would prefer some silver! it has a couple of slightly discoloured spots on the shield side but the queens side is good, what would you offer for it? 2oz silver??

Very nice find, i check every 20p i get but never seen one

cheers Russell! ive checked every 20p ive had for almost 10 f*#! years i couldnt believe my eyes :)

This is exactly the kind of thing that I like to see... and look for. I've never heard of this 'mule' and if I lived there, I would be looking every day in every change that I received. Congrats on finding the holy grail.

Unfortunately errors in UK are nowhere near as valuable as in USA but it's still fun

Nice find good for you, thanks for sharing it. We have a mule in Australia that I always search for, it's a year 2000 $1 dollar mule with a ten cent strike on the obverse. They are very rare and hard to find, a decent one could fetch you up to $2000. Cheers mate and have a happy new year.

Thanks mate keep looking it will come when you least expect it! happy new year bud :)
