First ever silver pouring experiment!

We packed a lot of stuff into our recent visit with @ejr, and one of those things was taking a stab at pouring silver!

Earlier in the week we spend a day with John Masterson getting the run down and doing some pouring in his shop. We were ready to give it a try at home!

Day one was a flop! All we had was a propane torch and it never got hot enough to get pourable, so we mostly had a big glob that was a melted 1 oz bar :(

Day 2 we upgraded to a map/oxygen torch that melted the silver no problem once we got it all figured out.

So it was time to pour into the wood!

Turns out 1 oz of silver is deceivingly small once it’s melted and poured, this coin sized mold was way to big.

So we tried a smaller hole we made with a drill bit! I was worried it was going to be way to small but it fit perfectly.

We finally had a successful pour! Can’t say it’s anything to amazing and needs some cleaning up but we have poured silver!

I’m sure it’s something we’ll try again one day, but not sure it’s anything we’re going to end up doing on a large scale, we’ll probably just leave it to the masters, it’s much harder than it looks!

It may not have turned out as great as you had hoped, but still cool to say that you did this.
What is the reason for using wood?

Using this type of material must be somewhat complicated, mainly because it hardens relatively quickly. I think it's excellent that you try to do this kind of art in your own home and share the process, I've seen great works using this material. Excellent post, greetings.

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

at least you tried it!! now you and we know how hard it is to do a these precious shapes that they do on the silver/gold

Valiant effort my friend. My first was just a blob too. And I'm ready to try again. We gotta start somewhere, and you have a pretty great teacher in Masterson!!

You’re on your way to becoming a master pourer!! Every time you’re going to get better at it and I can’t wait to see the progress you make along the way!

First you had the will to try. Even after failing once you tried again. Then you succeeded but was not proud of the results. You are performing a step by step road to achievment. Congrats!

Good luck buddy. I'm working with copper pours. Pouring silver is my next goal. Wood pours are tricky you need to pour a few times to get a good result.

great craft!

Nice first try! All casting takes work! You might try casting with Delft Clay, in a small cope and drag like sand casting. I find it allows me to get very fine detail, without going all in with investment casting. Treating with a flux before pouring seems to help too. If you can't find some easily, try Borax.

You might try Sterling Silver instead of pure silver, it melts at a significantly lower temperature, and will pour easier as a result! Keep posting, and let me know what you think of the delft clay!

:D

I might try and melt my scrap silver I've found Metal Detecting one day.
