Why do They Face Left?

There seems to be no real fact behind this decision from the mint, although there are several speculation on why this happens. Just as soon as you hear the speculation, you then you realize it is coin specific and if it was true then some that face left would face right.

Now just to clear this up so there is no misunderstanding when I say faces left, that would actually be right if you where looking at the coin.

Here is one we will start off with. The Lincoln penny.

Now the 2 most popular speculation are as follows.

  1. Lincoln put an end to slavery, and everyone else turned there back on him. Now this one is completly wrong, no real evidence to back this one up.

  2. Lincoln was assassinated while in office, again there is no real evidence that this is the reason. Example John F Kennedy was assassinated while in office and he faces right.

Next coin is the Franklin half dollar.

Could not find anything on why Franklin faces left. Put i will put one out there or start one. He was a visionary and new what the future would bring, so he looks forward and leaves the past alone.

Next up is the Barber half dollar.

No speculation at all could be found on why Barber faces left.

Next coin, Susan B Anthony dollar.

Again, no speculation on why she faces left.

So here is a list of coins with portraits thag face left.

  1. Loncoln cent
  2. Buffalo nickel
  3. Barber dime
  4. Baber quarter
  5. Baber half dollar
  6. Franklin half dollar
  7. Susan B Anthony dollar
  8. 2005 Jefferson nickel.

So to sum this up, there was a bunch of google searches and a lot of reading. To find out no REAL reason at all on why some face left and some face right.

I Guess when it comes to the FED and the MINT, they do not need a reason or anyones permission.

Thanks for stopping by

Peace out

Glad you put some effort to find out why. I am sure one day we will all know the reason behind it. Proud of you boy! Keep it up.

Hmmm... I never really thought about this one before! I guess it is what it is just because. No real rhyme or reason to it. Thanks for researching it anyway!

Very interesting. I can tell you that on coins from the British Commonwealth mints successive monarchs face alternate directions. So the next King or Queen will face the opposite direction to the current Queen.

Beat me to it :)

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

Now this one is completly wrong, no real evidence to back this one up.
It should be completely instead of completly.

Interesting for sure! I would love to onow the answer!

Thanks a lot! Now I'm going to be wondering why each coin is facing whatever direction! 😀

It actually is an interesting observation. Hopefully there is a reason other than that's how the artist drew it.

I take it, the ones facing Left, are as if they are looking in the Mirror and seeing the Left side of their Face...??? Otherwise, they appear to be looking Right to me... I'm looking at the Right Side of their Faces... The opposite would apply for those you say are facing Right...

IN GOD WE "TRUST" THE PLAN...
