My bestie @silversaver888 wrote a great post yesterday about special pieces and friendship. This morning I went to my dresser this morning and saw a piece exactly what my bestie wrote about.

Roughly 30 years ago, the summer that I graduated high school my good friend Roger’s father passed away. He had been sick for many years and it was his time.

His mom and dad were divorced since shortly after Roger and I became friends. His mom kept the house and the three children and he got an apartment several towns away.

Roger and I would go visit often and spend the night as well. My father would drive us if he could, if not we took the bus. I would always make us what in the army is called ”Shit on a Shingle” (which is chipped beef on white toast with white sauce). My dad had shown me how to make it as a kid.

Roger’s dad always had a pocket full of change and when I was there would plop it on the coffee table and let me search it for anything good. Amongst the change he always had a 1899-O Morgan silver dollar. I would always ask him for it, and he said it was his pocket piece.

In an effort to keep this post short, I will get to the point I am trying to.

The summer prior to his death, Roger and I spent a week at his apartment. I was driving now and that made visits much easier. The day we went to leave Roger’s dad grabbed my arm, opened my hand and put the Morgan in my palm and closed it. He said “I hope she brings you luck”. I tried to say no but he wouldn’t take no for an answer.

This Morgan has been on my dresser for years now. I carried it as a pocket piece for several years until one day working I nearly lost it forever. I was working doing union carpentry in New York City and got a tear in my pants, I didn’t realize that the tear was also in my pocket as well.

If I didn’t recognize the sound of it hitting the concrete floor it would be gone.

Roger is no longer with us as well, he was killed in a car accident. A drunk driver ran a red light and plowed him. Ironically Roger and his dad died on the same day August first.

This piece is very special to me, not because it is a Morgan and not because it’s worth anything. Once you see the coin you will instantly tell it’s seen better days.

Here is the coin....

As you can see, there is no rim left on the coin, and all detailed surfaces are gone. But I don’t care.....

Special pieces equal special memories.....

Thank you for stopping by
