Here is a great group of 3oz and 5oz Engelhard silver Ingots. Highlighting a couple different 3oz classes. This 5oz series shown in a 0 leading serial number. Even the elusive 100g Engelhard!! It's amazing how many different series there are. As well as varieties with in a series. It's certainly overwhelming for anyone who has not spent a lot of time on www.allengelhard.com reading up on the information.
Has anyone ever thought, why and when did they create this website? Everything has meaning behind it! What was the origional purpose of www.allengelhard.com? It has clearly grown over the years into a huge resource for the vintage silver collectable community. Expanding into so many different refiners! At one time, it was ONLY Engelhard ingots on the website. Now I am going to show you why it was created....
Yes, you are really seeing this. Every single one of those bars is a fake replica. A replica so good that it was even manufactured using .999 silver. Back in 2006-2007 these ingots started popping up like crazy. Ebay auctions, listings, private sales. All manufactured by one @$$hole named JB Campbell. It got to the point where the small group of buyers who were purchasing from him started to collaborate. They started to see duplicate serial numbers. Putting these ingots side by side it would take a very educated trained eye to be able to spot this kind of flaw.
^How good is your eye? Fake vs Real. One of these is Authentic.
That is when Allengelhard was formed. A couple of the origional core collectors threw all the bar's they purchased in one box and sent them into the expert. Each fake ingot discovered was stamped with the word replica. They exposed JB Campbell and he got sent to the wolves. From that point on they decided they would create a website that would help identify authentic Engelhard ingots. Offer information to the public so they could do it themselves. That is exactly what they did.
They offer an entire section of thier website that is dedicated to inform the public what to look for.
- Font style, and size.
- Dimensions
- Edges roundness/shape
- Hallmark style
- Serial number range
This is where it all started. Not many people are aware of this and I believe it's important to bring it to light. The guys behind the website are genuine people who have an extreme passion for this hobby. It's amazing how it all started and where it has ended up. I've heard people refer to this website as the 'Bible' of silver bar's.
To this day when an odd looking 3oz Engelhard ingot pops up. All the alarms sound and everyone goes into research mode. It's hilarious but warranted. It's possible there are a few JB Campbell replicas floating around still. Do yourself a service and check out www.Allengelhard.com. Knowledge and education in this industry is everything.
@stokjockey is going to yell at me for not putting in a link. I definitely deserve it.🙈 😅 I am not tech savy but will figure it out very soon.

Dude, that is crazy?! Do people collect the replicas too? Or have they mostly been melted down? This is really interesting, thanks for this cool post.

honestly people don't even know the replicas exist! I didn't and had a friend show me them one day. I was immediately interested in purchasing them because of the back story. I think they will be worth a lot of money one day! Many very old replica US ingots are worth tens of thousands. Potential is there....

Great article ingots!
I love allengelhard.com but was unaware of the back story. Very interesting stuff!
It is my guess that the one on the left that is genuine. It certainly looks all engelhard.

WOW!
I've been stacking for a while now (2005).
Time to go to the bank(s) and get into the safety deposit box to check those ten oz bars...
Thank you @silveringots for this information!

Yes it's worth giving things a once over. Not many replicas discovered in the 10oz class but I'm sure certainly possible. Glad you enjoyed this article @scan0017. Appreciate your support.

Hey @silveringots my LCS guy (which is about 80 miles away from me) just emailed and offered to sell me 1 of two OGS 10oz bar. I don't know vintage ingots. Any thoughts? Thanks. You can find me on discord too.
