I have been studying Shanghai Hong Kong silver ingots for a couple years now. The back story is rich in history. Which makes them very enjoyable.
Over the years I have noticed these ingots pop up ALL over the world. Which usually isn't the case when an item is manufactured in one specific area.
After studying the characteristics the manufacturer used to manufacture these. It is pretty clear someone else is making imitation ingots. The original maker produced high quality ingots. That makes it very difficult to match! Technology has changed drastically over the years. Believe it or not, new methods and technology makes it difficult to replicate that old "vintage look."
The ingot on the left is what I believe to be a fake ingot. The one on the right is consistent wit advertisement photos of Shanghai ingots available for sale in the 1970s.
The two hallmarks of Queen Victoria are clearly different here. A longer jaw line and nose are the two charactoristics that stand out to me. This is something to keep an eye out for in the future!

Yes, it is getting harder to spot the fakes. I try to stay with the smaller items from a reputable dealer. Thanks for sharing the education.

Reputable dealers certainly help with confidence. Sometimes they arnt educated on specific items though. For example an ancient coin dealer selling vintage ingots. .

That is really interesting @silveringots! I do love to look at various coins from different countries and from the past. Maybe it is because I live in the US and it is so different from what I am seeing. Great Post!

To the untrained eye this would never be spotted. I've seen them fly through auction houses with no second guesses.
