My lost silver coin treasure rediscovered

The Journey

Many years ago I was a 12 year old boy who loved to collect stamps and coins. Years went by and a boy turned into a young man who went off to university and traveled overseas for fun and adventure.
While away thoughts of my boyhood treasure were long forgotten. Until, I had a couple of boys of my own and I thought it would be nice to share these coins and my memories with them. Unfortunately my investigations came up with a couple of my stamp albums but no coins.

The Rediscovery

I lost my father to Melanoma a couple of years go and speaking with my mother she mentions he may have stored my coins in his old lockbox. I recently rediscovered the lock box hidden in the box in the back of a storage cupboard? And even better it wasn’t locked. Amongst various paperwork I found them, still in their display sheets, these coins are mostly in poor circulated condition but the memories are far more valuable to me.

A collection of Australian predecimal silver and copper coins, penny, three pence, sixpence, shilling and Florin. A little research pointed out that after 1945 these coins only contain 50% Silver 40% copper, 5% nickel, 5% zinc but half silver is better than no silver.

Nice. Back around the start of the GFC, I bought my mother's silver coin collection off her at silver spot price, plus some other bulk predecimal coins off eBay, as a hedge against inflation. The inflation never really came (well not extreme Zimbabwe style inflation anyway), but the silver price did double and then halve again.

Three years later I discovered bitcoin and liked how its inflation was controlled in advance. There could only ever be 21 million. I bought some bitcoin.

Now, I am diversifying my crypto holdings and have put some funds from a bitcoin sale into silver and other precious metals. Seems I may have come full circle.

It’s so cool to have like minded people to connect with here in Steemit. Most people you talk to about Crypto or Precious Metals look at you like you’ve got 2 heads and your hand in their pocket.

Great story and something’s value is not alway monetary

So true, the most valuable things to us often have little monetary value.

What a great story, with a happy ending. Glad you and your collection were reunited.

Thanks, it’s anazing how life goes in circles and amazing my interest in crypto has brought me back to Silver.

Good job mate! Maybe you could look into the coins individually and give us a rundown on them. Old Aussie coins are great.

Job for next weekend. Was going to do it today but got Shanghaied into other domestic duties.

Are those coins really collectable? I have never seen an old school Aussie coin before 😅

These have some value. The uncirculated ones can be worth a pretty penny.
Of course containing min 50% Silver they have a precious metal value as well.

That is really cool, it makes me want to start collecting. Thanks for sharing your collection.

There are calculators online like this one that help you calculate the silver value of a collection. Some coins with key dates and good condition may fetch more, but the melt value gives the intrinsic value of the silver in the coins. They generally sell from 5% below melt value to 10% above depending on whether it is a private sale or eBay.

They can be a good way to start collecting silver because you can buy fractions of an ounce and they are easily recognisable and less worry about fakes.

That’s awesome thanks for the link.

That was great to find those finally! I'm sure it brought back all kinds of memories.

To some, old coins are just that, to others they have a value only for what their metal content is, for others its the history they represent, and i suppose for some they are like a song from a particular era that triggers memories, those old coins however have hidden value that some cannot see, they are of their time but they are also of our time because they bring with them both memories and emotion, i would simply ask what else can bring the same \o/
