Neutron Irradiated Dime: Part II, Where Did It Come From?

in steemsilvergold •  6 years ago
Yesterday, while digging through a box of my stuff that has been in storage for 15 years, I happened upon a 1948 Roosevelt dime in a blue plastic holder from the N. Y. World's fair in the mid 60's.

As I said, I am not sure where I got this and when I posted about it yesterday I didn't know much about it but for what the blue plastic holder told me. So I put the question to anyone reading, do you know anything about this dime?

To be fair she did send me some info later on discord, in this interesting article. Turns out irradiating dime was a thing for a hot minute in the 50's & 60's. It was mostly done at the American Museum of Science and Energy

Here is a little something from that article:

The irradiator works as follows: A mixture of radioactive antimony and beryllium is enclosed in a lead container. Gamma rays from the antimony are absorbed by the beryllium atoms and a neutron is expelled by the beryllium atom in the process.

These neutrons, having no electrical charge, penetrate silver atoms in the dime. Instead of remaining normal silver-109, they become radioactive silver-110. After irradiation, the dime is dropped out through a slot in the lead container and rests momentarily before a Geiger tube so that its radioactivity may be demonstrated. It is then encased in the souvenir container. Radioactive silver, with a half-life of 22 seconds, decays rapidly to cadmium-110 (In 22 seconds, half of the radioactivity in each dime is gone, in another 22 seconds half the remainder goes, and so on until all the silver-110 has become cadmium). Only an exceedingly minute fraction of the silver atoms have been made radioactive.

So it would seem that most dime were irradiated at the museum in the 50's but the machine did travel to the world's fair in New York in 1964. I seem to remember my dad talking about that fair so I ent him a message this morning.

Didn't they know, at that time, that the half-life of silver-110 was 22 seconds? Why would they do this in something that a few minutes after the transformation would return to be a normal dime?

It really is unbelievable. Not sure about the "why" of it, probably that age old answer, "because".
:)

It is a neat coin, but I'm still puzzled as to why they were doing this to coins and handing them out... just a novelty I guess. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, it's nutty! "Check out our big machine that irradiates a dime. When it's done you can stare at you dime that looks exactly the same as before!" WTF?

thats a pretty interesting thing summertooth! I've seen one online a few years ago, but only the once, and I'm no expert. But I think they did that to merc dimes back in the 40's as well.

Yeah, I did see them on ebay selling in the teens of dollars so, like just about anything, there is a market for them!

😍 SCREENSHOT!!!!!😍

I feel like a superstar. 🌟

I love that your parents were there!

Yeah it is cool. I like that they were there and likely got this dime irradiated on the big machine, and don't remember! :)

Wait... I just reread this. Your boxes have been in storage for FIFTEEN years!!! WHAT?!! 😂🤣

Not everything, but a few yes. I guess it's a bit of an exaggeration though. Everything got packed in 2006 when I moved from Las Vegas and a few boxes have not been opened since that time. Life n stuff. :/

It’s like a time capsule to yourself!!! 😍
📦 🌷🌞🍂❄️ ⏳

I did find all of this really interesting with the half lives of silver and what the coin becomes after a period of time. It sounds like its worth more as a collectors item, so that could be a cool avenue to explore more.

Glad you enjoyed it @knowledge-seeker. I love reading about things like this too.

I think you can still do this today. Ship your dimes over to Fukishima and have them touched by the locals.......sorry that was horrible. It is a really cool piece though.

@vgholdingsllc just descended one tier deeper in to H-E-🏒-🏒....

🙏🏻

Oooooo, hell has tiers too. What do I get for a 150sp delegation?

One of those red forks, but only 2 prongs. Third prong at 1000sp. 😉

At least I know I'll be in good company. LOL

Is #thecube one of the tiers?😄

I believe it is the penultimate tier.

😉😅😂🤣😭😭😭😐

Nice @vgholdingsllc! :) I can just dip mine into the Columbia River. I live down stream from Hanford :(

You should be fine as long as there isn't a river Tsunami.

Baaahahahahaha!

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

Yeah yeah yeah!
