It's important to celebrate important events and milestones like birthdays, anniversaries, Fridays, other days that end in "y." Today was one of those momentous occasions, Silver Quarter Day! My wife and I needed to do a groceries run, and there's a coin store not too far away from the Trader Joe's. Of course I was happy to help get the groceries!
I've been saving the nickels and dimes from my paper route. I also dug through the couch cushions for some extra supplies. Remind me to start inviting more people over who keep change in their pockets. I'm going to start putting up fliers.
Anyhow, after the we got food, we stopped at the LCS on the way home. I didn't have much time since we had frozen stuff, but I knew I needed to check out the pre-1965 coins. Those 90% silver beauties had been calling my name for a while and my "normal" LCS doesn't carry those. At $13 for $1 of face value, I couldn't complain.
As I was digging through the stacks of coins that were barely recognizable, I stumbled on a few of these shiny ones. Then I found a few more. Here's the Eagle.
Here's the other side of it.
It seems that someone brought in a roll of them, all in really good condition. I made the noob mistake of not being prepared for such a find, so I wasn't able to get all of them, but I did pick up $3 worth of 1963 and 1964s.
Here's a picture of all my new friends together.
They wanted to do a "fun pose" for you all.
Alright, it's time for my new buddies to go meet the rest of the family in storage.
Thanks for coming along on this fun adventure with us. Until next time!
Great looking quarters! And a respectable haul 😜👍 just know that bring enough cash to the LCS is nearly impossible lol. Here’s my most recent grab of some Canadian junk (80%) at $15 per $1 of face.
The loose 50 — others are fairly new too
😎☠️🍆🕺

Thanks for that. I was kicking myself a bit, but you're right. Even if I took another $200 with me, I'd still have found enough silver to justify having brought that... and still have need for more. I should probably just buy the shop! Ha ha.
Nice pickups there! 100%

Sweet buys, isn't it the case that the day you don't bring enough cash, is the day you find the treasure 😑. Anyway here's the coolest silver buy Ive made for a while. Spot +10%, picked it up on Thursday with some other sweet stuff.

You're killing me, @fat-elvis! +10%? That's crazy talk! You don't see that very often, much less for something that's colorized and in packaging. I can imagine that going for at least $3-$4 above spot. That's a nice find. Someone else might come in with another winning entry, but you're getting a 100%, my man. Thanks for swinging in!

Cheers. That's the thing with my local coin store. In his eye all bullion is equal, he's an older guy and a coin guy, so generic rounds or 2006 pandas, doesn't matter, both just bullion.

That sounds like a great place to shop. You can probably get better prices on stuff there than you could online. 2006 pandas will go for much more than a generic round. Maybe we'll all do a Steemit roadtrip down to your neck of the woods.

Yeah, it's a good place, often has a bit of Canadian 80% dimes and quarters. Usually he has some maples. And every now and then he gets a few different things in and sets them aside. For the most part, it's a collector coin shop, but there is a bit for folks like me. Next closest place is about 500 miles away, so if I want to buy, say 10-20 ounces of anything but maples, it's online.

Before I looked into the actual silver content in the old quarters and dimes I was mainly focused on 1ozt silver coins. Now that I have a better understanding of the value of the quarters, it's opened up a whole new area of possibility for me. As long as it's quality silver at a good price, I don't want to discriminate. :)
Yeah, 500 miles is a long way to go for some coins. Your average cost per coin would increase dramatically if you were driving out there!

How funny you write this, because earlier tonight I was looking at a quarter on our counter and thought, "that seems extra bright".
Looked at the obverse and sure enough, 1964. Don't know where it came from but happy to score an extra silver quarter!

That's amazing! What a lucky find. If I could get those in the couch, I wouldn't have to save so many to buy them at the coin shop. Ha ha! Congrats!

Heck yeah! I mean, obviously it was more than just couch cushion money. I'm passionate enough about silver that I specifically save my change so I can buy silver when I get enough. Still, it adds to the excitement of the story. Thanks for stopping by, Pit!

Silver stacking the junk coins! Woohoo!
I don't know what a LCS is, but I'm pretty sure we don't have any around here. Especially near a Trader Joes, which we do have a few.
At any rate, I've been looking at the 90% silver coins for years and have yet to make any purchases. You did it the way I should have been trying to do it, buying smaller amounts as opposed to the 250-500 coin bags I find on the internet sites.
Anyway, congratulations. The Washingtons all looked thrilled to join the family. Posing and all. :)

I think that "junk coin" is a specific term for coins that are unrecognizable. They've been so worn that you can't even tell what the design is. I think another word for it is "cull." You can get them cheaply because they don't have any value from the design. These ones are in really good shape and if someone were buying it for the specific coin, I wouldn't get a premium, but I could get a decent price.
An LCS is a "local coin shop/store." I should have made sure that was clear. Sorry.
I like to look at the coins in person. Also, do your research on the taxes. Some states have it, some don't. I would imagine that since there's no sales tax where you're at, you'd be safe, but it's something to consider.
I did the math and I got 2.169 ozt of actual silver in them. At today's prices, that's almost $36 worth of silver. I paid $39, so that's only $18/oz. Not too bad. If I buy American Eagles, I would pay around $18.75 right now, so I got coins and still saved money. I'm going to have to consider getting more of these now that I've done the math.
I really think that you should get some 500 coin bags though... especially if they're half dollars. That would be awesome!!! Take a pic of that and I'll give you THREE 100% upvotes. (Must include a picture of the receipt and your steemit name in the pic.) ;)

Oh, okay. Unrecognizable. Didn't know that.
I only know what I see and read on these seller websites where they call any coin minted through 1964 'junk' and then show pictures like this. They generally include that if silver were to ever go to zero then the coins will still have their face value, which I've always thought meant you could see their face. They also generally say that they are a good investment as far as silver coins go because they are widely known to contain silver in them (again because of when they were minted, which again, I figured meant you have to see the date at least). I readily admit that I'm not an expert, nor even a stacker—I'm a half-hazard wannabe in both regards.
Images like this.
I wouldn't doubt Oregon has some kind of tax like that. It's really surprising that we don't have a sales tax by now, but they're definitely working on ways to make it happen. One of the highest income taxes and pretty high property taxes isn't enough you know. You have to have the tax trifecta in order to accomplish anything on the state government level because otherwise it's just never enough.
Sounds like a good deal to me. Anytime you can keep the price low and still get something is good.
Well, maybe one of these days. STEEM rises and holds, I might be able to convince my wife. Otherwise, she's not all that happy with my investment instincts, which I will admit, have been sub par. :)

If you look at @thedamus's comment, you'll see that he clarified that you're correct. These are "junk." So strange to me that such a beautiful coin in such great shape would have the work junk associated with it, but if that means they want to give me a better deal, I'm ok with that.
If silver ever went to zero I would buy up all of it. Besides, if silver is at $0, the dollar sure as heck isn't going to be worth anything, so I wouldn't care about the face value anyways.
I'm still learning in this whole process (obviously), so don't even worry about it. We all start somewhere and try to learn a little more each day. One day we'll look back and see that we really went somewhere.
According to jmbullion.com which is one of my favorite sites to browse (haven't bought from them yet), Oregon doesn't have any tax on bullion! There you go. Good deals abound.
Unless it's a coin that I don't have, or it looks super cool, or I think the value is going to increase a lot over spot... I don't like to pay premiums. I look for those value rounds so I can pick up as many ozts as possible. I feel like I'm behind the game, so it's catchup time for a bit. Eventually I'd like to get into collecting more unique and valuable round/coins, but for now I'm focused on low-premium stuff.
Not investing advice, but I don't think you can go wrong with silver, especially at today's prices. Granted, it's not down at $4 where it was years ago, but it's still low and I think there's room to run. Again, not investment advice. ;)

I know all about your disclaimers. :) And it's okay, because I really don't need that much convincing and it's actually good to hear from someone who isn't such an expert but still much more knowledgeable because of personal experience. So, I appreciate all of that.
I think the term junk in this case isn't meant to differentiate from collectible coins. Might be an unfortunate use of words, but I don't think it's meant to be derogatory.
Cool. Oregon does manage to do a few things right taxwise, but not many.
Would the dollar be worthless? Generally when gold and silver and such things go up, it's because the dollar is not doing so well, right? Along with other paper stocks, I suppose. At any rate, I don't think we want silver going to zero, or the dollar. At least not until we've been able to get all hamburger, Chinese food, Italian Food and Mexican food places to accept STEEM. Probably need Pizza places and Arby's in that mix, too. :)

I'm personally offended on behalf of the coins. They need to be defended from such slanderous accusations and designations. :D
I wouldn't be upset about living in Oregon because of the scenery and such. However, you're right, the tax situation there is one big reason to avoid it. It's too bad.
I believe that when the dollar isn't doing well that the price of silver and gold goes up. Just because they go up doesn't mean that the dollar is doing poorly though. That's just one of the influences. I don't think we want either of them to go to zero. Doesn't mean it couldn't happen. I doubt it would happen with silver though outside of huge external manipulation.
If restaurants started accepting Steem, I could see the prices of silver and the dollar dropping. :) I don't eat fast food though, so I would need the grocery store to accept it as well.

I really only speak English, but I gathered from Google Translate that you like silver coins. I'm glad as I do too! Google said you want a "kayenagulo" but I don't know what that is, so I'm sorry but I can't help you with that. English would probably be a better bet than hoping that google translate is accurate. Thanks for stopping by though.
