January 22nd marks the day of the start of the Chinese new year festival this year. Differing from the gregorian calendar that runs Jan 1st to Dec 31st, the Chinese new year coincides with the lunar calendar. Combining both the solar and luna cycles, other cultures use the "new moon" to start the month. Coinciding with the solar cycle, it does mean that Chinese new year always falls between January 21 and February 21.

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar and solar Chinese calendar.

To celebrate the Chinese new year 2023, the Royal Mint (RM) have applied their craft to ensure a faithful representation of one of the most well-known deities in Chinese culture; Guan Gong

Made from 999 fine gold, these amazing little 20g bars are set to be very popular among the millions of people celebrating the festival. Giving the gift of "money" in the form of GOLD is a big part of the Chinese culture. Many religions and cultures hold gold very highly and incorporate it in many of their rituals and celebrations.

Chinease folklore says that parents would give their children red envelopes filled with money(gold) to deter the demon Sui, and this is a tradition that has carried on throughout the years.

I wouldnt mind if my parents gave me gold coins as a child, maybe it wouldnt have taken a large part of my adult life to understand the mess FIAT paper money has caused since its inception, or more specifically, since its breakaway from the gold standard!

So will you gifiting any loved ones gold this Chinese new year?
