Of course they didn't. The poor, young boy behind the till had no idea what to say. He didn't even pick it up at first. I'm sure he had seen me walking round the store taking photos with my phone and possible thought I was some sort of mystery shopper. He was polite, but still clueless and just asked if I had any other method of payment, "we take plastic"!!
I took back my britannia and gave the chap 2 X £1 coins. Explained what I was doing and that I had just offered him a solid silver coin worth approx £13 in silver alone but closer to £18/£20 on a well known auction website. We exchanged the usual pleasantries and off I went with my new tennis balls. The dog will love these.
So where to next? Come on folks, you suggest and I'll get it done.

How about if you visit a grocery store or a small family owned convenient store and try doing the same thing?

Go to a farmer's market, some old dude will not only take the coin, but would probably be able to do a nice conversion in his head and give you way more produce.
