Scavenge Sketching

Sketching the Agua Selva

From my journal…
Up early again, I walked along the beach away from the village. Catching glimpses of an occasional rooftop above the trees, palm fronds blown down from the night before litter the dry sand. And always the surf, amazingly loud on first arrival but now part of the background. I collect shapes as I walk, leaves, branches, seed pods, a trellis pattern, the faded trim on a veranda, clouds forming on the horizon, someone carrying ice in a burlap bag. All separate and at the same time just part of things. I attempt to tie them together on paper while allowing them to remain independent shapes and colors.

Scavenging for the essence of place

Sometimes I feel like drawing but don’t see anything in particular that I’m interested in. I really wanted to capture the flavor of this cool place, but that was not to be found in anything in particular. A little trick I play on myself is to just draw anyway, starting with an interesting design in a leaf here, a pattern in something else there, and see if it actually leads to an interesting composition. In this case, my scavenging of elements didn’t seem to work too well for a composition. So later I redrew it in Adobe illustrator, cleaned it up and added color to the shapes. The image below shows the outlines, and then the added colors.

very interesting way to capture the feel of a place if not translate the space literally. I like the result, I can feel what it is like there I think, at least a little, through this :)

Thank you @carlgnash. It can be very fun and free, when they work. some work out better than others.

This piece is very, very cool! Excellent shapes and colours!

Thank you so much @trincowski! They are fun to do.

Thank you so much for the upvote and resteem! I appreciate it @c-squared.

I feel like I'm walking through and catching glimpses of things seen through your eyes... the path meanders and there is a city at the far distance to the right, or maybe it's just my feelings... :> Very nice, as usual, @mrsomebody~

Thank you @veryspider. That describes it pretty well I think. I was staying at a little old resort down the beach from town, so I could see things like the roofs of a few structures rising above the palms. I've often wondered how to capture the feeling of a place. But much of the experience is in things like your mood, a heightened awareness from being in a new place, a subtle scent in the air, happiness from waking to a sunny day, very distant sounds of activity, how the sand feels on your feet... on and on. Since most of these aren't embedded in anything tangible, how do you capture it? I'm still working on that one.

The way you made something like this out of your perspective is really cool. It looks like a doodle-abstract lol

Also, im interested to make a steemsketchbook too. Is it an offical tag?

Thanks @ligarayk. When a sketch doesn't look very interesting, at least I can redraw elements I like and try to construct a new composition from it. You are free to use the steemsketchbook tag, I didn't create it.

I really like this! What a great way to capture how a place feels!

Thank you @melinda010100. I don't draw this way too often, but sometimes it helps!

I really enjoyed seeing this as a creative possibility!
