Unlikely Sketch Locations

Don’t draw and drive!

Seriously, this was crazy and not recommended! I shouldn’t even show this.

Everyone has different tastes and interests when it comes to sketching. I’ve been a member of a Seattle sketch group, and it is always interesting and revealing to sketch with a group and then compare sketchbooks afterwards. It helps you to understand how you see things compared with others.

A collection of misfits

Culling through my sketchbooks, I decided to show a selection of odd places I’ve drawn, like a laundromat, a burned out building, the trunk of my car, debris piles from a storm. I also did sketches while stranded at the Cincinnati airport – Midwestern Paradise they call it.

My own inclinations for sketching material are toward the seedy and cluttered. The back side of things often offers lots of material for sketching purposes. A manicured flower bed may not be as interesting as the inside of the gardener’s shed, just in terms of forms and light and shadow. Whereas the flower bed is most likely already beautiful, what can I do with that? Like Tom Waits, I like to tell the story of peripherals – the down on their luck, untidy places that offer their own slice of life.

Did you see the dog? My mom's dog Skipper is hiding in the shadow under my old car with the open trunk.

great only better. Very impressive 3D, I think the last one is my favorite.

Thank you @dandays. Some of these drawings are old, so I'm hoping my sketch technique improves over time!

I love your pen and ink work - your shading is very impressive.
I'll be following you in the hope of seeing more of your ink work.

[EDIT] Just went to follow you and discovered that I already am. :D

Thank you @philemerson. And thanks for the follow too! It's always fun to draw things that have strong light sources and shadows. I like your drawings as well. Oh, I just realized I am already following you!
