Match Preview

West Virginia needs a win this week if they want to stay in the race for the NCAA football playoff. Their loss at Oklahoma State two weeks ago really hurt their chances, so they’ll need to show the country that they can get back on track and continue dominating opponents. Texas has had a lackluster season so far at 5-4, but they were able to knock off 8th-ranked Baylor and then Texas Tech over the past two weeks. Texas can still fight for pride and for a decent bowl game at the end of their season.

This is the Big 12, so don’t expect much defense. Both teams have balanced offenses, but they both give up a lot of yards. And while Texas is allowing over 33 points per game, West Virginia is giving up only 20.6 points so far this season. Don’t expect them to hold Texas under 21 points. Unless they can force several turnovers and get the Longhorns playing from behind.

West Virginia Mountaineers

West Virginia is coming off of an easy home win against Kansas. It was just what they needed after an upset loss at Oklahoma State the week prior. They’ll need another win this weekend against Texas but can’t get caught looking ahead to their showdown with the Oklahoma Sooners on November 19th. Texas may have four losses on the season, but their offense is looking better over the last couple of weeks.

The Mountaineers will need to find a way to slow down the Texas running game. A good way to do that would be to jump out to an early lead. They weren’t able to do that against Oklahoma State and ended up paying the price. The Mountaineer’s senior quarterback, Skyler Howard, is having a good season so far, ranking in the top-20 in several major statistical categories. He averages over 280 passing yards per game and completes 65% of his passes. He has thrown 16 touchdowns in eight games with only 6 interceptions and has also added another six scores on the ground.

Howard is joined in the backfield by junior running back, Justin Crawford. Crawford is averaging over six yards per carry this season and shouldn’t have much trouble maintaining that average against a porous Texas rush defense. Receivers Daikiel Shorts and Shelton Gibson will be in the spotlight for this game. Each has well over 600 yards on the season and they have caught a combined 10 touchdowns. Skyler Howard should be able to exploit the Longhorn defense with their talents.

(7-1, 4-1 Big 12)Team Stats

Texas Longhorns

With their defense underperforming, to say the least, the Longhorns have had to rely on their freshman quarterback, Shane Buechele, and their junior running back, D’Onta Foreman, to carry the team. Foreman has risen to the occasion by leading the nation in rushing yards per game, with a whopping 180.8 so far this year. He also has 13 rushing touchdowns and averages over seven yards per carry. Texas will need to feed him early in the game to keep the explosive West Virginia offense grounded.

Buechele will need to take care of the football and continue to spread the ball around to his corps of receivers. He has been doing both fairly well this year. He has six receivers with over 200 yards and seven with multiple receiving touchdowns this season. If he can play a clean game, the Longhorns have a legitimate shot at getting the big win. Watch for senior quarterback Tyrone Swoopes to enter the game when they need a few short yards. At 6’4” and about 250 pounds, he has the size and strength to make short conversions for first downs – and touchdowns. Swoopes has already scored seven times on the ground so far this season.

On defense? Forget about it. Texas has been terrible this year, giving up 464 yards per game and over 33 points. If they can force a few turnovers, they’ll be in good shape. Otherwise, it could be another long afternoon for the Longhorns.

How to Play

  • Vote on the main post to enter the bet (main post rewards will also be added to the Stake Pool).

  • Cast your Vote Bet on ONLY ONE outcome for which you bet on for the win (Multiple comment votes will be automatically disqualified by the script, unvote and revote counts as multiple votes and will be disqualified).

  • After 24 hours, the post and related game comments payout to the pool; remember 25% voters rewards are deducted from the total post payout value first as per Steem curation rules. Voters are rewarded in standard fashion in proportion to their Steem Power holdings.

The Stake Pool:

  • The remaining 75% of the total payout is paid out in 50% Steem Power and 50% in liquid currencies, the latter now varies in payout ratio after the new fork. To make the process less complicated, we have decided to use all paid out SBD to buy Steem in the internal market to create a grand total Steem Stake Pool.

  • 30% of the Stake Pool will be retained, of which 15% will go to the writer/sports presenter of the post, and the 15% balance towards editing, development and advertising.

  • 70% of the Stake Pool will be held until the event/game outcome is determined.

  • Once the winning outcome is determined, we will execute a proprietary developed script that will divide and pay out the Steem rewards equally, using the Power Up method, to Mass Distribute SP to all participants that voted on the main post as the entrance fee as well as voted on the correct comment representing the winning outcome.

  • Only participants with a Reputation of 35 or more will qualify to earn SP rewards, but non-qualifiers can still vote and comment in support of the redistribution initiative.

  • Entry cut-off time is the earlier of the post payout or the start of the event.

  • @steemsports in the unlikely event that when the Stake Pool is divided up between the winners and the nomenclature resolution goes below the third decimal place (example: 0.0001), then Steem decimal restrictions won’t allow a payout and the pool will carry over to the next game.

Well, I was right about one thing - turnovers would slow these teams down. There were seven total in the game.
