The Chicago Cubs made a massive move on Saturday, signing free agent right-hander Yu Darvish to a six-year, $126 million contract. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report the deal, which was later confirmed by several other sources.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today added that the deal includes opt-out clauses and also no-trade protection for Darvish.
The Dodgers, Brewers and Twins had made comparable offers to the Cubs. The Dodgers’ offer was contingent on them being able to move salary elsewhere and it doesn’t sound like they were able to line things up in time.
It’s a massive boon to the World Series hopes of the Cubs who now boast the strongest starting rotation in the National League. Darvish joins a rotation that already includes Jon Lester, Jose Quintana, Kyle Hendricks and Tyler Chatwood.
The 31-year-old hurler posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 209/58 K/BB ratio across 186 ⅔ innings for the Rangers and Dodgers during the 2017 regular season, but struggled in the playoffs and the World Series.
From a fantasy perspective, the move to Wrigley Field is a downgrade from Dodger Stadium, but after spending most of his career in Texas, it’ll still seem like an upgrade.
Now that Darvish has signed, the rest of the starting pitchers who remain on the free agent market should start to see movement as well. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Alex Cobb, Lance Lynn and Jake Arrieta find new teams in the coming days, perhaps joining the clubs that wound up on the losing end of the Darvish sweepstakes.
As if my beloved Pittsburgh Pirates didn't have a horrific enough winter, now the Cubs get even better.

I like the direction the Pirates are taking now though. Cutting bait on Cutch was the right move for the future.

What do you think about it being a 6 year deal? Seems risky for a 31 year old with his injury history. I'm also surprised he was able to secure that many years given how difficult the market has been this offseason.

He had to take less money than he wanted, and what the market had been given in years past, to lock in for six years. To combat that, he also has the option to opt-out after only two seasons

A lot of other Dodger fans I know and myself aren't that sad to see him go, he really disappointed us in the World Series. I think the fault of his Game 7 shortcomings falls more on Dave Roberts though.

Hard to hate on a guy for just a handful of postseason innings though. He certainly would've helped the Dodgers rotation in 2018

He no doubt he would have. I wouldn't categorize it as hate but a lot of people just weren't begging for the guy to come back. It was an emotional series and we came so damn close. Tough one to lose.

Yeah, I get that. Still better to have gotten there and lost, than to not get there at all. (Said by a bitter Tigers fan re: 2006 and 2012)

Oh you understand the pain then...twice over. Yea I think when the dust settles and the results are in from this dodger era we can look back and say that. It was such an amazing series. both teams played their heart out. Baseball is crazy man. I think it's a much harder path back to the World Series compared to say the NBA Finals. Superstars seem to have more command over the outcome in basketball than baseball.

Yeah, for sure, there's so much parity. And with the second wild card in play, so many teams have a chance to get in, and from there its just whoever gets hot at the right time. Still a great time to be a Dodgers fan as the organization is loaded, but it would be a damn shame to go through the entire Kershaw era without a ring.
