Two central division rivals kicked off opening day playing against one another. James Shields, the former Royal, took the mound for the Chicago White Sox as their 2018 ace. Duffy gave up 7 hits on five earned runs before the manager made a call to the Pen’ to rely on relief pitchers to try to unscramble the mess he left. Shields was awarded the victory, although he gave up earned four runs on just 5 hits through 6 innings. Not to mention, Matt Davidson, the White Sox DH, had the game of his career as he put three of four balls he was faced with behind the outfielders gloves.
Kansas took an early 4-1 lead kudos to Moustakas’s RBI single, followed up by a deep ball from Kansas’s newly acquired first baseman, Lucas Duda, who brought in 3 runs on the homerun. As the top of the fourth inning came around, the Sox brought themselves back into contention. Abreu, Davidson, and Tim Anderson scored consecutive homers, equalizing the score at 4. Yoan Moncada’s RBI double put the Sox up by 1 to end the fourth.
Tim Anderson and Matt Davidson made their numbers known, once again, in the top of the fifth inning as they scored consecutive homers. Matt Davidson seized his home run hat trick in the eighth inning, handing the Royals a not so easy comeback 10 point deficit. By the end of the ninth inning, the Royals had only cut the deficit to three, losing 14-7 in their Opening Game.
