Mikal Bridges was born in Malvern, Pennsylvania in 1996. He was brought up with modest beginnings and had to fight for everything that he got. He would spend hours upon hours playing hoops outside at the park and try to keep himself away from some of his troubled friends.
He would enter his freshman year at Villanova with very high hopes. Head coach Jay Wright got him quickly in the rotation and Bridges would play 20 minutes per game. He was so slender in size at 6’7 and 195 pounds his freshman year that it was a huge focus to get him in the weight room. He would average 6.4 points per game and it was easy to see that he would be a special player.
Bridges had a wonderful sophomore year and averaged 9.8 points per game and really showed his talent as a wing player with long arms and a good midrange game. His shooting was drastically improved and he became a deadly free throw shooter at 91.1%. His 3 point shooting also improved by 10% and the NBA scouts were taking notice. Bridges thought about leaving after his sophomore year to go to the NBA but he decided to stick around for one more magical run.
His junior year would be his best yet. Bridges averaged 17.8 points per game and helped his NBA stock immensely. His name will be called as a Top 10 pick. Last weekend, in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, Bridges showed just how explosive his offensive game has become when he was playing against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Bridges came out of the halftime break and scored 20 points in 5 minutes. It was simply amazing.
But before Mikal Bridges can find out what city he will call home in the NBA, he still has some work to do this weekend in San Antonio. The Villanova Wildcats will take on the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday night.
