In San Francisco, the Rockies and Giants squared off in a NL West battle between two teams chasing the first-place Diamondbacks. Over in the American League, the Rays got their 5th win in their past 6 games as they dispatched the Angels behind a stellar outing from starter Chris Archer. The Rays are chasing the Blue Jays, and the red-hot Red Sox and Yankees in the very difficult AL East, but just when it seems as though they are going to fade away, they seem to bounce-back.

It took 12 innings, but the Rockies outlasted the Giants in the first matchup of the season between the NL West foes. Carlos Gonzalez got a bloop single with 2 outs in the top of the 12th that broke a 3-3 tie and plated 2 runs to lead Colorado to the victory. The Rockies got things going right away in the 2nd inning, thanks to a Daniel Castro 2-run double and RBI single from pitcher Chad Bettis, who was able to help his own cause and propel Colorado out to a 3-0 lead after 2. In the bottom of the 6th, Bettis made one costly mistake however, when he left one over the plate that Giants' first-baseman Brandon Belt hit out to right-center field for a game-tying 2-run home run.

Jeff Samardzija settled in for the Giants after the rough 2nd inning and went 6 2/3 innings, surrendering 5 hits, the 3 runs, 3 walks, while logging 3 K's. On the other side, Bettis finished with a very similar stat line - going 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and striking out 5. Closer Wade Davis worked the 12th for the Rockies, picking up his MLB-best 16th save of the season.
