US Open Roundup: Roger Federer Marches On

Roger Federer has had a fabulous year winning the Australian Open at the turn of the year and the Wimbledon as well a few weeks back. But with the onset of age, the Swiss maestro has been facing more injury layoffs than ever before. Even before this third round match against Feliciano Lopez, Federer had struggled to finish off the matches as they went on for gruesome five sets each.

It was rumored that the 19-times Grand Slam winner is enduring a back injury and that Federer might withdraw before the match. But the third seed of the tournament produced a masterclass yet again and beat the Spaniard, 6-3 6-3 7-5. The 36 year old was at his flawless best as he gave away an astonishingly low tally of 16 unforced errors.

As a result of this victory, Federer will now be facing the German, P. Kohlschreiber in the fourth round. The Swiss should be confident of staying on course for a 20th Grand Slam title with his professional record against Kohlschreiber being 11-0 in favour of him. Federer’s service game has always been a strong hold for the 36 year old and he troubled the Spaniard with his aces and an unplayable first serve throughout the course of the match.

Federer spoke at length about his bout with injury and the straight sets win this time which have helped him gain confidence going deep into the tournament. The Swiss mentioned that he improved vastly from the last two games in this one as his movement was even more sublime. With a potential semifinal clash against arch rival, Rafael Nadal, being set up, Federer is gaining traction gradually as he finished off the third round in just an hour and 46 minutes.
