The PGA Tour made its way to the desert this week for the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, AZ. The event annually grosses the largest crowds all year and is considered one of the most entertaining events of the season. This year was no exception. Saturday’s crowd of 200,000+ fans broke its own record from last year.
Bill Haas jumped out to a hot start in the first round with five birdies and an eagle to finish with a seven-under par, 64 to take an early two stroke lead over five players that all posted 66.
In the second round, Rickie Fowler and Bryson DeChambeau made a move on Haas, both carding their second consecutive five-under par 66s to overtake the lead. Chez Reavie and Daniel Berger both shot one stroke better than the new leaders, shooting six-under par 65s to stay within one shot Fowler and DeChambeau.
Fowler continued his steady play on moving day, carding a four-under par 67, finishing his round strong by birdieing his last three holes to take sole possession of the lead by one stroke. John Rahm made the biggest move in the top five on Moving Day recording five birdies in his last eight holes, finishing with a 65 pulling within one stroke of Fowler. DeChambeau and Reavie rounded out the top four, posting 68 and 67, respectively, also trailing Fowler by one, heading into the final round.
Gary Woodland joined the party inside the ropes, after started his Sunday charge with a five-under par 30 on the front nine. Woodland continued his stellar play on the back nine with birdies on four of the last six holes, ending his day with the tournaments low round of seven-under 64 to take the lead at -18, and leading the field with 25 total birdies on the week.
Crowd favorite, Phil Mickelson started his Sunday off slow with pars on 13 of his 14 holes before finishing his round with 3 birdies on his last four holes, eventually finishing in fifth place at -14.
Reavie’s chances took a turn for the worse on the famous 16th hole when he hit his tee shot long and left, ultimately making bogey after failing to get up-and-down to save his par. On his final hole, Reavie still had a chance with a 25-foot birdie opportunity to join the lead and sunk it to tie Woodland, sending the two to a playoff.
In the first playoff hole, Woodland hit his drive into the fairway bunker, while Reavie hit his drive into the fairway. Reavie played first and missed the green short and left. Woodland hit a tough bunker shot to the fringe, leaving him with a 20-foot putt for birdie. Reavie hit his chip shot 15 feet short of the cup, leaving the door open for Woodland who lagged his putt to under two feet. Reavie had a fifteen foot par putt to extend the playoff but lipped out, allowing Woodland to tap in for his first victory since 2013.
