What in the World of eSports?!

If I asked you to list the sports you knew, how long would it take you to mention eSports? Yes, eSports!

How Long?

Just like some people thought it was stupid for 22 grown men to "be running after a ball" many years ago, a lot still disregard eSports' claim to being a "real" sport.
Over several decades, we've been introduced to, and have come to love the usual suspects like football, basketball, swimming, and every other one that takes place during the Olympics, and it seems like it's going to take a long while for eSports to be essentially recognized as what it truly is - a sport.
Like most people, I've always heard and seen the term eSports being thrown around but was never truly curious enough to dive deep and explore the new world it is.
These days, every now and then, I catch a glimpse of eSports on live T.V. I usually stay glued for a minimum of 30 minutes, taking in all the glamour and trying my best to understand what's going on before moving on to the other channels I really intended to watch.
However with claims like the revenue from eSports is expected to rise from $130m (£100m) in 2012 to $465m (£365m) this year, you have to do more than just casually watch; you've got to take notice.

So What Exactly Are eSports?

Picture quite a few teens and twenty-somethings in a room playing video games on separate computers. Now, picture this room to be big enough to conveniently house the 173,500 attending. You get the picture now? Well, the Wembley stadium in England is only about 90,000 capacity yeah? That should give some perspective. There's usually teams competing for the ultimate prize. Two teams go up against each other while the spectators/passionate fans watch on the big screen. If you see these games, you'll realize this sport has come a long way and isn't just child's play.

Brand Power

For a long time, Monster had been sponsoring the events and now more recently been joined by the likes of Coca-Cola. These two are only examples of the many brands slowly catching up to the whole new craze. Nissan, HTC, Logitech, Twitch, and Axe are other sponsors of the sport.

South Korea and eSports

South Korea seems to be the cradle of eSports and it's no wonder they have some of the best teams. With one of the world's fastest and most developed broadband networks, coupled with a lack of a national sport (apart from taekwondo), the government saw the opportunity to finally get an identity and they have done pretty well so far. But, with revenues of about $257 million in 2017, North America is eSports' largest market and its projected to grow to $607 million by 2020.

Games You Can Play

So, you must be wondering what type of games get played during these competitions. Well, I mentioned they are video games so your favorite, Candy Crush, isn't one.

Here's a List

  • League of Legends
  • Counter-Strike
  • Dota2
  • Overwatch
  • Call of Duty
  • FIFA

Final Words

While I barely understand what's going on and the fact that I can't really distinguish teams, I tend to enjoy the general thrill that comes with these games. It's probably why they say sports is a universal language. My new found interest in the sports is already making me seriously switch from a FIFA only player, to trying out the other games. And, this is a reaction I believe everyone that takes a little keen interest in the sports will eventually start to get.

Do they really house 173,500 attendants. If so, that's crazy. I recently grew more aware of it after watching an anime named KINGS AVATAR. Which is strictly on esport. And from time to time I'll spot an esport game on tv, and I'll be like oh, that's a legit sport after all.

Do they really house 173,500 attendants.

Yes! This record was set during the Intel finals in Katowice (the fifth year in that location). It used to be a weekend-long event, but it now takes place over two weekends. More than 46 million viewers watched online (up 35% from last year).

And you're reaction to the legitimacy of the sport is spot on!

I might as well find my gaming controller lol

Esports is available for betting on popular online sportsbetting sites. You know you've made it when you get on those sites.

Yes! And the eSports betting market is said to be a lot larger than the sponsorship/marketing side! That's a lot of money.

You forgot to mention Starcraft 2! No eSports list is complete without it. Also, there's even blockchain project focused solely on eSports; check out GameCredits :)
Nice post!

Yes I've seen GameCredits and will be mentioning it in subsequent posts. Oh wow! Who forgets to add Starcraft 2? Silly me.

Thanks for reading 😊

I love esports! I predict esports will be the biggest sporting market within 15 years

That's a very bold prediction!

This is a huge industry and is only getting bigger. A few years ago I was fortunate enough to attend Blizzcon in Anaheim, CA. It was amazing and I'd highly recommend it to anyone that's a fan. Watching the Heroes of the Storm championship was intense.

There's the huge potential for growth as it's really just beginning to get popular outside of South Korea and North America.

Esports will become one of the sports in Olympics in the fut

We can't wait! It's most likely going to be included in the 2022 Asian games first, then we can move up from there.

Huge money in esports these days, and it's only growing

You're definitely right.

great ,, i love steemit Sport@@@@

Any counter strike fan here ???

yes! Over 10 years of counter-strike in my blood :) from CS 1.6 to CSS and now CSGO.

Yay thats what i do. I do all the tournaments, I do wager SnD, Hardpoint, Uplink.

I am an Overwatch esports writer and things are growing fast. Following the traditional sports framework that we already know works, esports will grow very fast. The Overwatch League will be starting early next year with player salaries, big sponsors, and even a player combine for scouting purposes. Thanks

See you around.

eSports have definitely been growing in popularity! Did you see that the University of Utah now offers scholarships for eSports??

https://techcrunch.com/2017/04/05/utah-becomes-the-first-power-five-school-to-give-scholarships-to-video-gamers/

This is great news, isn't it? There's a school for gamers in South Korea and now there's this for the University of Utah? Amazing times.

A lot of money is being pumped into eSports and it seems nobody wants to be left out.

Great job I'm new user I need followers please guys help me

I really think that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will be huge in esports in the coming few years, especially as the game is improved and new maps/content is added.

Esports will surely have great success in the years to come.

Great read @steemsports. This is such a great post for me to find right now. Thank you for sharing! I work atUnity, the game engine and I'd definitely like to get your insight. I’m wondering if you or your audience is familiar with Unity Game Engine and Development Platform.
