Universe, as it seems to me, is an endless spectrum of uncertainty. Since the dawn of human civilization, we have used ingenious, and sometimes rather misleading, tools to surmount this uncertainty. We failed in countless bizarre ways which later turned out to be too obvious for the future generations. We invented Mathematics and Science to make this uncertainty a little less daunting but every time we tried to unveil a mystery, universe challenged us with an awe-inspiring shape never known before.
We were the result of 4 billion years of evolution, we shared the genetic language with every being on earth. We had the legacy for survival embedded in us, no different than other being. In fact, to an extraterrestrial mind we would have been practically same as out nearest cousin, chimpanzee. Then came the cognitive revolution, the universe gained consciousness, the same being which once was a cloud of star dust began to wonder about the heaven. Now we felt different, we began to inquire about our place in the universe, but there was no answer to be found. It was like searching for a black cat in a dark room, with our eyes blindfolded. Everywhere we searched, there was nothing but uncertainty . Our place in the universe was as uncertain as our survival. We didn't know when or why a particular storm struck. It was too much for a young mind to comprehend, we did what was easy; we surrendered nature to a higher being, a thing to be worshipped; God. The notion of a superior being removed the uncertainty of nature and life itself; Thunderstorms, volcano, heavenly bodies seemed to have a will of their own, future seemed like a reflection of our past, a deity seemed to have jurisdiction over as all. The idea of a God worked fine for many millennia to come but the human inquisitiveness was not to be suppressed for long.
The cognition revolution didn't stop with our invented fairy tale. We were once convinced that the earth was in fact the center of everything. All heaven was created for the pinnacle of God's creation. Then, on January 7th, 1610 - the Italian astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei pointed his telescope towards the planet Jupiter and discovered something that changed the entire course of mankind. The discovery of four Moons of Jupiter orbiting a celestial body, other than Earth, was a blow to geocentrists. The inconvertible proof of earth being not the center of universe even led to series of trials against Galileo, "And yet it moves" still echoes today. Even if the earth was not the center of everything, the Sun was definitely the one, and once again we were fooled by our own self imagined importance. Time and again, we long for the idea that we were once created for a reason. Yet, throughout the history, the evidence is null. Many people find this view too depressing but why? Why do we want a special place in the universe? Though we are tiny, obviously not the center but still the fact that life arose from star dust is too awesome. The fact that we are a conscious organ of the universe is enough to make me feel special.
Once we were the apple of God's eye, placed on a garden custom made for us. Today we feel like we were just some sojourner.
But the old question still resides: Did God created man is his own image or the other way around?
