Differences between weather and climate

in steemstem •  7 years ago

Good day steemit friends, most of the time we misconceive or interchange the meaning of weather and climate. As we all know, some days are either sunny or dull, others are cloudy or bright, cold or hot, dry or wet, e.t.c. Indeed, even within one day, the conditions may change from being bright and sunny in the morning to being dull and rainy in the evening, and the next day condition may be different. All these changing conditions of the atmosphere in a place over a short period are what we refer to as weather. These changes take place in the lower part of the atmosphere which is called the troposphere.

The elements in the atmosphere which, when they change brings about changes in weather are sunshine, temperature, pressure, winds, water vapour content, precipitation e.t.c.

Climate is related to weather, but a little different from it. Like weather, climate describes the changing conditions of the atmosphere. Also, the elements of both are the same. However, the following are the main differences:

  • Whereas weather refers to the daily changes in the elements, climate describes the average or aggregate changes over a long period, say thirty to forty years.

  • Weather affects only small areas at a time. Climate on the other hand, affects whole regions. Sometimes during rainy season, it may be raining in one part of a town or village or along one stretch of a road, whereas a short distance away it is completely dry and sunny. Climate on the other hand, changes over very wide areas, like between southern and northern part of a region.
