What are antibiotics?
The word speaks its self Anti- Against, Biotic- living (any living pathogen).
The drugs which are effective against the microorganism by inhibiting their growth or just by killing them.
Antibiotics effective against bacteria, virus, and parasites but not all of them like a common cold-causing virus, flu(influenza).
The First person who was treated with antibiotics was A policeman in England named Alexander by Penicillin cryogenum(1941).
Antibiotics suppress the growth of bacteria by several mechanisms-
Interfering with their cell wall synthesis, eg- Penicillin, cephalosporin, Vancomycin.
Stopping the bacterial protein synthesis, eg- Tetracycline, Clindamycin.
Causing leakage in the cell membrane, eg- Amphotericin B, And many more mechanisms.
On the mode of their action Antibiotics can be - Bacteriostatic or Bacteriocidal.
Bacteriostatic - Which suppresses the growth of bacteria, eg- Sulfonamides, Erythromycin, Tetracycline, Clindamycin.
Bactericidal- which kills the bacteria, eg- Penicillin, Cephalosporin, Vancomycin, Cotrimoxazole.
Antibiotics Resistance?
The ability of organism (bacteria) withstand or prevent himself from the antibiotics causes the antibiotics Resistance.
In common language, we can say it is a kind of evolution of bacteria to prevent himself from antibiotics action.
What causes antibiotics Resistance?
One of the leading cause of antibiotics resistance is their irrelevant use, means antibiotics are used where there is no requirement of the use of antibiotics, like uncomplicated sinus infections, the normal common cold.
Our body has such a Powerfull Immune system that it can easily take care of these infections with your proper self-health management.
How to prevent it?
- Never use antibiotics without knowing its use, like most of the people do if they have a little discomfort during cold or flu they just take a pill of Azithromycin, that is hazardous to your body.
- From doctor point of view never give the antibiotics without knowing the causative bacteria for that disease, first do the culture for the causative organism and in the next step prescribe them a selective antibiotic for that organism, most of the individuals who are not doctors just give a broad spectrum antibiotic for hit and trail.
- By rational use of antibiotics, the main objective behind rationalize antibiotics is that to reduce the excessive inappropriate use of antibiotics and keep them for reasonable infections.
To prevent the resistance not only the doctor but patients also have to aware of the proper use of antibiotics.
