I remember I first heard about this disease in Trainspotting (the movie). Tommy had survived his heroin addiction, at least up until that point, but then caught this parasite from his kitten and died. Or maybe this disease inspired him to take up the highly risky activity of heroin injection??

He died? Although this disease is quite dangerous, treatments are quite effective. It seems like Tommy must have HIV from his past history of taking drugs. Intravenous drug users are one of the most vulnerable population to get an HIV which would make him immunocompromised. This would exaggerate symptoms and can ultimately, lead to death.
