I want us to walk through one of the bones of the upper limb (deltoid region to phanlanges) and we will be looking at the bone called Radius.

We are going to study it under the following steps; embryology(development) , shape, length, birth defects, muscle attachment, arterial supply, nerve supply and its function.

Embryology of Radius
The radius begins its ossification at about 8th week of intrauterine life( IUL), its ossified from three centres, one for the elbow end, one for the body and the last for the wrist end and the radius begins its ossification near the middle of the body.

Shape
Its a long bone, The head of the radius bone is disc (round) shape, its upper concave part (surface) articulates with the humerus while its shorter and smaller part attaches to the ulnar.

Length
The length differs with regards to the individual.

Birth defects
Firstly what is birth defects; its used to describe structural, functional, bahavioural( attitude) and metabolic disorders that is seen at birth. An example in radius is;
Radial aplasia:
its a defect which affects the formation of the radius bone in the arm.

Radioulnar synostosis:
Its a defect whereby there's an abnormal bony or soft tissue connection between the two bones of the forearm and its a rare congenital( birth) defect.

Function
Mainly is to support and give shape to the forearm, it also helps in pronation and supination of the forearm.

Muscle attachment

  1. Biceps: its inserted in the radial tuberosity of the upper part of the bone.
  2. The supinator, flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor policis longus muscles are attached to the upper third of the body of radius.
  3. Extensor primi internodii pollicis, extensor ossis metacarpi pollicis and pronator teres muscle attaches to the middle third of the body of radius.
  4. Tendon of supinator longus, pronator quadratus muscle attaches to the inferior or lower part of the body of radius.

Arterial supply
Radial artery

Nerve supple
Radian nerve

Venous drainage
Radial vein

I hope I'm able to contribute in impacting knowledge about the radius to my fellow steemians.
