I got an Arduino on the way i was planning on using it as a console emulator though i may give some of the ideas here a go thanks for the info and great post...

I have a lot of Arduino hardware, but the Pi is by far my favorite. Much more flexible, but there are some cool Arduino devices like the Proton.

I've always wanted to mess around with one of those things. Such a cool project template.

We've been using them for years to play all the movies we download, on the TV - in fact we have worn out our second one and I've just ordered a third one - they are cheap on AliExpress (they have free freight so usually work out better for everyone not in America)

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-New-Raspberry-Pi-3-Model-B-BCM2837-1-2G-with-WIFI-and-Bluetooth/32617095846.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.15b24c4dcwtwa9

They charge more than they cost. They are $35 list price, AliExpress always charges over list price. The problem, in the US they are hard to get without a bundle unless you buy from overseas or through Arrow.

Amazon sellers are known to gouge on this item because there is very little profit margin and there is a very high demand. But list price is $35 and anything higher is actually charging a premium.

Check out Adafruit in New York, https://www.adafruit.com/product/3775 just $35US. They have a large amount of addons and a wonderful learning site. learn.adafruit.com with projects of all skill levels.

A few of the parts from my portable gaming console is from Adafruit. I believe it ends up being more when you add shipping. Arrow is the best place for US citizens to buy a buy when they have their deals.

We just tend to buy stuff from Ali Express because they are free freight to New Zealand in under two weeks, while American places like amazon charge up to US$50 courier, often take longer, and sometimes totally stuff up the packaging! (my favourite was the time they sent us a box of stuff but forgot to tape it closed!)

So the price of the Pi itself is not that critical - I think we paid about $150 for our first one from England, so $37 is a bargain

WOW, I just purchased a Raspberry Pi 3B+ from Arrow with free shipping to Canada. How do they make money?

Raspberry pi + retro pi = <3

mine

I didn't have it all nice like that, just had it plugged into my projector and used xbox controllers. Used for mulitplayer games like mario kart so it made more sense. The pi is so much more powerful than you would think. One of the best $60 investments I've made(35 for pi, 10 for sd card, and then the rest on the power cord).

I have one that is just in a case and that's it, for the TV.

I had turned my Raspberry Pi into a kodi box for the tv. I never realized how functional it was for everything else. I will have to look into them more as you have given me a few new ideas.

I used a Pi 3 for ages as my Plex client. Not too long ago I switched it out for an Nvidia shield so I can get 4K.

Interesting. I do have a 4k tv so getting content to suit that would be good. Especially since Kodi has lost a lot of services in the past few months. I will take a look at it and see if it would be a better service for me. Thanks.

If you are an iOS user (Apple) the AppleTV now has a 4K option and might be a better fit. I went with the Shield because at the time AppleTV was still 1080P, it did not send audio directly to receiver and decoded it on the AppleTV, and the Shield does 4K game streaming from my PC. But the App Eco system on the Shield is really weak even though it has a lot more horse power.

Dude you are brilliant... I've been trying to figure out what to get my daughter, that wasn't just practical. She's been doing some Java, and was asking me about python a few days ago and about building computers.
Plus she loves retro games...
You just saved me hours of searching...

Python is the idea lang for a Pi.
Although there are some node modules, most Pi libraries are designed for Python

I piddled with some raspberry boxes a couple years ago doing some remote digital displays on the cheap. Probably do one of the kits with a couple SD cards she can swap out and not have to reload everything.
lol, may even get a post or two out of a project with them...

I would recommend just loading the SD card with your own version of Raspbian, most of the kits include Noobs which is a loader with multiple OS installers. I like to just write the SD stick directly with latest Raspbian version.

Cool, that's what I did before, I think I used etcher to write the image to the SD.
lol, I guess I should probably let her figure some of that out. I was thinking loading a couple up, I used a ubuntu image before, then she'll want a retropie (me too..), and probably a Raspbian.

Raspberry Pis are such cool devices. I wish I could have gotten one as a kid. It'll have been a dream come true. I would totally get it as a gift for a kid.

This Raspberry PI seems is a type of adruino

Raspberry Pi is a fully working computer, Arduino is a simplified device that is programmed using C/C++ subset with very limited functionality compared to the Raspberry Pi.

You could almost think of a Raspberry Pi as a computer with Arduino on board but allows you more flexibility in programming it.

This is coool
I would love to get it

Concerning using it for LED display(lighting design) which computer language would use for programming raspberry pi

I used mine as a torrent download manager. Bricked my Samsung Evo SD card on third day due to electricity failure.

Now sometimes use it as a alternative computer for browsing Internet.

You can boot off USB Hard Drives with the Pi 3, they are far more reliable.

I have Pi 2 but I'd definitely look into it.

Pi 3 is a pretty significant upgrade and now they have the 3B+ which is a bit more powerful.

Not an enthusiast on building stuffs or electronics, but man i'd seriously work my ass off on building that smart mirror at any cost, WORTH IT. Thanks for the info mark.

Check out https://www.dakboard.com/site for ready built mirrors

I got a kano for the nephews a few years back when it was a kickstarter thing... Was planning on getting a pi around that time, but never followed through..

Maybe it's time? Thanks for the reminder..
