The debate over the threat posed by the uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence platforms remains hot after months of discussion, and now Russia's top leader Vladimir Putin comes to the fore

This technology comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict.

Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world, "said the Russian president. "If we become leaders in this area, we will share this know-how with the entire planet, just as we share our nuclear technologies today."

 Closer to Skynet than ever

Halfway between motivational discourse and the revelation of intentions to control the Earth, these statements almost immediately triggered the reaction of Elon Musk, owner of Tesla Motors and one of the most alarmist figures around these platforms

For the genius the official start of this race between world powers could lead to an apocalyptic scenario that gave rise to the Third World War. These are delicate words, but Putin's intentions are equally critical.

Musk has a long history of warning about the dangers of this technology, but it seems that most are focused on achieving the best Artificial Intelligence possible.

Can you imagine robots out there fighting or shooting at each other? The trick will be to turn robots from the opponents on each other.

Certainly there is a danger of any technology being used for ill purposes. Let's be honest, the human race has lived under nuclear capabilities for over 50 years and, so far, nothing. The same is true, for the most part, of chemical weapons outside a few isolated cases. AI just seems to be another technology that can have a horrific downside, if we allow it.

I admire Elon a great deal and am glad he is blowing the whistle on this because it is something we need to remember and work against. However, it is far from a certainty.
