The surrounding area is integrated into the Protected Landscape Area of Pálava. This is a landscape complex of the Pavlov Hills and the valley of the Dyje River, protected since 1976, which was listed on the UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1986. Since 2003, Pálava is part of the extended biosphere reserve Dolní Morava, which also includes the Lednice-Valtice Area and floodplain forests at the confluence of the Morava and Dyje.
2004, Pálava as Bird Area was included in the European Natura 2000 network, as well as another
8 European sites of importance. There are many other small-scale protected areas on the territory of the Protected Landscape Area. The most valuable ones include the National Nature Reserve Děvín-Kotel-Soutěska, the Mikulov region and the Svatý Kopeček Nature Reserve, Turold or Šibeničník, as well as the natural monument of Cat's Rock.
The area of the Protected Landscape Area of Pálava occupies 83 km 2and most of its most precious reservations are located on the main ridge of the Pavlov Hills, stretching 12 km from Dolní Věstonice to Mikulov. Its highest peak is Děvín (550 m asl). The dry and warm climates of this area are related not only to the widespread cultivation of grapevine but also to the finds of many plant species that are not found elsewhere in the Czech Republic. Exceptional is the occurrence of the Lumnitzer Palava cave, which grows in one place in the world at all. The most famous plants of the Pálava are probably blue or yellow kosatce low or large sands, which grow in the so-called karst lesostepi on the slopes of Děvín or Svatý kopeček, as well as preserved vegetation of floodplain forests with summer oak and asian trees near Křivý Lake or remnants of salamilous vegetation on the banks of the pond Nesytu near Sedlec.
Not only the flora but also the fauna of Pálava are exceptionally rich due to varied natural conditions. Pálava is situated on the border of the Pannonian steppes and the Central European deciduous forest, so there is, for example, a rare praying mantis, usually a raccoon, golden-haired, exceptionally sagittarius. From the reptiles you can see the lizard green. In the area nesting predators, among others, the sea eagle, from the penguins there was recorded the strongest population of the southern strawberry, the Wallachian mildew or the strawberry meadow in the Czech Republic. Several species of bats live in caves in limestone cliffs or forests. At the river Dyje, the European beaver is relatively well represented.
