This week I dumped Facebook. It wasn't too hard, short of deleting all the apps I created, downloading my digital life, and deleting the account.
Deleting the apps seemed to be the key because every time I deleted the account, somewhere I logged back in and reinstated my account. Once all the apps were gone, the Facebook account was gone too.
Why did I do it? Since November I have seen roughly the same 6 people sending me memes on why Trump is bad and why Trump is good. I honestly don't care. I have other things to worry about. I took a survey of my users, and roughly 25 showed up to say they actually see my posts. Most of them, I never interacted with.
I have family using Facebook, but they were not sending me photos of the grandkids; they were sending or resending the same memes. It really wasn't worth keeping.
I'm an early adopter of social media. I told everyone about Twitter before it became a thing, I had an AOL account, and I was telling folks why they should jump on Facebook. I actually thought the social targeting feature was a good thing. Until, I discovered my likes and dislikes were making me a hot product. I don't like being something others can sell.
Anyway, I found Steemit as a refreshing place to share my writing and experiment with different forms of poetry. And I am now tesing out SteemThat.com as a place to link up with people interested in my thoughts. Who knows, I may actually decide I like social media again.
