Act I, Scene iii
(...continued)
Annabella: I'll think about it.
GIOVANNI enters the garden just beyond ANNABELLA’S balcony.
Giovanni: Lost... I am lost.
Annabella: Huh?
ANNABELLA’S interest is piqued and she stands up and walks over to the balcony.
Giovanni: Oh, what slings and arrows of outrageous fortune plague me so?
Annabella: Who... perchance to dream is that?
ANNABELLA slowly approaches the landing near the balcony to get a glimpse at the man speaking such words.
PUTANA follows behind.
ANNABELLA beholds GIOVANNI in the distance.
Annabella: Damn…
Putana: (From behind) Why, that’s Giovanni, mistress. Your brother.
Annabella: Who??
Putana: It’s... um... maybe we should go inside, I think. Shall we?
The Stars Do Pray
PUTANA tries to grab ANNABELLA’S hand and take her inside, but she flinches away, continually fixated on GIOVANNI in the distance as he nears the balcony, reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet.
ANNABELLA:
PUTANA, WHO IS THAT
STANDING IN THE LIGHT
SOME CELESTIAL CREATURE
APART OF THE DIVINE
BUT WHY IS HE SO SAD
WITH A FACE THAT SENSES BAD
I'M WONDERING
IF I SHOULD STEP A BIT CLOSER
PUTANA:
He's your brother...
ANNABELLA:
PUTANA IT CAN'T BE
THIS THING THAT'S WRAPPED UP WITH GRIEF
HE BEATS HIS HEAD
AND WIPES HIS EYES
I THINK THAT MAYBE HE DOES CRY
I'M WONDERING
IF I COULD MAKE HIM
FEEL BETTER!
GIOVANNI:
O WEARY ME,
O WEARY ME
A TRAGEDY BEFALLS
THE LESS I HOPE
TO SEE THE LOVE
SO TRUE
AND LOVE IS SO CRUEL
DOVES WILL FLY TO YOU
AND YOU JUST HOPE
THE WOMAN IS...
A PERSON NOT RELATED
TO YOU
I MUST TELL HER THAT I LOVE HER
SWEET ANNABELLA
SWEET ANNABELLA
ANNABELLA:
PUTANA, DID YOU HEAR?
HE LOVES ME
WITH ALL HIS MIGHT
STANDING THERE
BELOW TONIGHT
WEEPING WITH A FATE
SO BRIGHT
I'M WONDERING IF
WE COULD GET A BIT CLOSER
Putana: Annabella...
ANNABELLA and GIOVANNI are finally facing each other, ANNABELLA from the balcony and GIOVANNI just below, in perfect tableau.
ANNABELLA AND GIOVANNI:
THE STARS DO PRAY!
