I was talking to one of my friends earlier and the topic of "taboo" came up. If you can't tell by now, I'm not really shy and luckily neither were they! I always find the whole concept of taboo topics to be absurd. I get that there is a time and a place where some things are inappropriate due to moral constraints, but why are some things just so offensive it's like people want to pretend they don't exist? I feel that these "taboos" stem from a lack of self identity and being uncomfortable with ideas and concepts that one does not agree with, but perhaps one of you will change my perspective today. I feel that perhaps the taboo of these topics is really just our own judgement and assumptions based on our perspective, but sometimes there are uncomfortable topics that need to be discussed and awareness raised. Obviously sexual activity is one of the biggest taboos in Western culture, but how repressed as a society are we when we are uncomfortable talking about normal human functions and interactions? What are your thoughts? Namaste.

Hahaha, I love taboo discussions, I love to watch the level of shock portrayed in peoples faces when you drop the taboo bomb. The way I see it it has a lot to do with the indoctrinated way of upbringing that places strict boundaries of ones moral as well as socially acceptable boundaries.

Repressed societies do the taboo as if it were a prohibition on the topic. When things are repressed the darker world takes over and makes it happen or even makes money off the taboo. When it is legal or not taboo it may not be as exciting or hip in some cultures. Making it normal or not a taboo reduces excitement of risk and scarcity or risk may have a more enticing price tag. taboo topics are absurd today with all the information available everywhere but are part of social ingeneering - setting borders (storytelling: masturbating - one goes blind...) just like laws. restricting the access to the unknown (or harmful) to consolidate a moral standard.
i agree with you that this repressive practice should end to let as choose freely our identity but with caution, becouse with no culture in those areas we'll set the rules (and taboos) for the next to come.
the lines are blurred, we should take that step
