Harlan's Dream

It had become a compulsion for Harlan, He was being driven, and he knew not why. Something, someplace had a pull on him and it was not going to let go. It became the strongest when he was close to water. He did not understand. He loved to fish, catch and release mostly, but it was a form of relaxation that he had enjoyed most of his life. He had to give fishing up the pull was just to great when he got near the river, it did not matter what river. It felt to him as if he was being pulled by the water, he resisted the pull, he fought the pull.

After several years, and become very ill, he caved into the call of the water. He packed his fishing gear, lawn chair, and headed out to his old fishing spot. The night before the dream was stronger than ever, "come, sit, fish, talk", he knew not who or what called him, only that after a year the dream was the most clear it had been in a long time. He still felt like he was losing his mind.

Five years had passed since he last went fishing, five years since he had stopped going near natural bodies of water. It was only after last nights dream that he realized it was five years ago that his health had started to fail him. Five years at most was what the doctors told him just a few days ago. The doctors did not know what was wrong, or chose not to tell him what was wrong. Harlan was okay with that when they told him. He felt he had lived a good life, and he was not going to worry about a future that had not happened.

He was at peace with himself, he let the dream pull him. As he approached his old fishing haunt the dream voice called, "not here, keep going, I will tell you when to turn". Harlan listened, he had given himself over to the dream, crazy, mad, or insane, it did not matter, he knew he had little time left, so he listened. "Here, turn here to the left and park. It will be a long walk, but I will guide you".

For two days Harlan walked. He was not surprised or afraid, he was at peace with his life, with his being, and he had placed his trust in the dream. "Here, you are here. Just over that small hill, a place to build your home. A place to sit, fish, talk. I will be here. You will have a future here, in time a family." Harlan smiled. He walked over the small hill and stood looking down at a nice little stream with a place to build a home. He continued down, set his chair by the stream, and began to fish.

I am not sure if #storyfromapicture was started by @themanwithnoname, but his two recent stories were very good, enjoyable and inspiring, so I joined in, and am also hoping @steemusa brings back their monday photo and thursday photo story.
His two stories, like I said pretty enjoyable reads.

That's a cool story! The water does call to some of us. I haven't gotten to the point where it's giving me step by step instructions, but it seems that's what Harlan needed.

As far as I know I started the tag, rather inadvertently. I have a few older stories that no longer appear in the tag searches, but I'm not skilled enough with Steem to find the older ones. I think it's a good tag, and I'm glad to see you posting with it!

I enjoyed your short stories, and was glad to see it again. Just a picture and a story, a nice idea. I hope more pick them up again. It's winter and winter I like to read.
