STEMng Digest: Week 26

in stemng •  6 years ago  (edited)

This is the 26th episode of the #stemng digest series where we bring to you some of the best posts under the #stemng tag in the past week.

The first ever #stemng meetup of the 11th July 2018 was a success. We would like to thank our parent team, #steemstem and every member of the #stemng family, including those that made it to the meet, and those who were unavoidably absent. Thank you guys for all the support.

For those that do not know yet, stemng is a sub-community of steemSTEM, a community-driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts by Nigerians on Steemit. The project involves submitting quality STEM-related posts to the steemSTEM management for upvoting and resteeming where applicable.

More information about stemng activities are found here, while details of what it means to be part of steemSTEM can be found here, as well.

As we usually do, we have sifted through the stemng tag and even though there were several good posts to choose from, below are the posts that stood out for week #26.

Saturday: Dwarfism: HOW DANGEROUS IS 'SHORT'?

This week started off with a post on dwarfism by @funmiakinpelu. The people who are often misunderstood, sometimes jeered and seen as a sort of object of entertainment. The article examines the medical causes of the phenomenon while also taking a shot at the possible complications which may befall such people.

Sunday: HUMAN AGING, AN UNDYING FISH AND THE CONCEPT OF TRANSDIFFERENTIATION

The @thullanie's post was one that had perplexed humankind for centuries- the subject of immortality. While the humans may not have succeeded in that, a certain jellyfish which goes by the name of turritopsis dohrnii, a fish which just goes on living might have. For more on this fascinating fish, do visit the link above.

Monday: Understanding Mosquitoes - Their History With Us Humans, Why Are They So Attracted To Us?, Other Diseases Transmitted By Mosquitoes Other Than Malaria and so on ...

The little fellow known as mosquitoes may be little but if you think you can underestimate how deadly it can be, just take a look at its world's annual killing rate of 725,000 people. @menoski is here to guide us through the path of enlightenment on this little troublemaker. The post is an enlightening one, do visit the link above for more details.

Tuesday: Let's talk about what happens to the food you eat inside of you - Digestion.

Every day we eat, what happens to the food we ingest is what @mr-aaron discussed in the article. The digestion is an interesting feature of all living things, for processing of food into a form the body will make use of it. More details of the process are on the link above.

Wednesday: Pulling an all-nighter has become the norm for humans, but are we setting off permanent brain damage consequently?

The modern day living gives some of us only a little time for sleeping. A situation @olasamuel 's post checks on the dangers associated with little sleep as regards the brain and our well being. We think everyone should check the post to see if we are doing something that may negatively impact on our health in the future.

Thursday : Who Says You Cannot Build Your Own Airplane? Series #11

The series by @teekingtv on aeroplane continues. On this one, the author takes on the duty to inform us of some of the instruments that the pilots require to guide in navigation, and flying of the aeroplane. After the series, even if you are unable to build your own aeroplane, at least you should be able to know how one works.

Friday: Getting to the Summit of Mount Everest. Part 1 - Getting to know the Sagarmatha

This is the last selected post for the week and it happened to be that of @writeit. We may probably have heard of Mount Everest, but have you heard of Sagarmatha? That is the Tibetans for "forehead of the sky" which is the name the Tibet's know Mount Everest for. For other interesting things about the highest mountain in the world, do visit the link above.

About the selection process
