The Quantum Technologies Flagship, a €1 billion European initiative, was launched last week at a high-level event in Vienna hosted by the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The Flagship will fund over 5,000 of Europe’s leading quantum technologies researchers over the next ten years and aims to place Europe at the forefront of the second quantum revolution.
The Flagship will initially fund 20 projects with a total of €132 million via the Horizon 2020 programme, and from 2021 onwards it is expected to fund a further 130 projects.
They will focus on four application areas – quantum communication, quantum computing, quantum simulation, quantum metrology and sensing – as well as the basic science behind quantum technologies.
More than one third of participants are industrial companies from a wide range of sectors, with a large share of SMEs.
Its total budget is expected to reach €1 billion, providing funding for the entire quantum value chain in Europe, from basic research to industrialisation, and bringing together researchers and the quantum technologies industry.

Comments
This European funding programme coincides with government-backed funding announcements for quantum technologies in the US and in the UK recently.
In the US, the House of Representatives recently voted in support of a $1.275bn programme of funding to support quantum technology R&D.
In the UK’s recent budget announcement the UK government increased its funding for UK quantum technology R&D to about £300m.
The European Commission announcement will be supplemented by local funding by individual member states, for example Germany has committed €650m to support quantum technology over the 2018-2022 period, while the Netherlands has a €135m ten year funding plan.

I am quite curious to see the full potential of quantum. It has long been talked about as a major technology that could significantly alter the way technology operates.

Indeed it needs to happen gradually so security can be assured. Otherwise people with quantum capacities would control tech and cryptos.

Indeed, Quantum is the next leg of the story.
We will need to adapt the cybersecurity space to prevent from attacks.
