Morpheus: I’m trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You’re the one that has to walk through it. —The Matrix

Bertrand Russell: Socrates was the chief saint of the Stoics.

"Marcus Aurelius: Adorn thyself with simplicity and modesty and with indifference towards the things which lie between virtue and vice. Love mankind. Follow God. Homer the poet says that Law rules all.- And it is enough to remember that Law nrules all.

Thomas Jefferson: As we advance in life, they all fall off, one by one, until we are left with Virgil and Homer, and perhaps Homer alone."

Thomas Jefferson: As we advance in life, they all fall off, one by one, until we are left with Virgil and Homer, and perhaps Homer alone.

Look at the Stoic Faces. Witness the vast, sweeping landscapes telling of Seneca’s temple of nature. Look at the Eyes wary of Seneca’s “shortness of life.” Witness the controlled emotions of the veteran gunfighters facing down death herself.

Does it get any more Stoic than the epic showdown in the grand finale of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? Has there ever been a better portrayal of the Stoic than in Clint Eastwood’s “Man with no name” in Sergio Leone’s Trilogy? Is it any surprise that Sergio Leone was inspired by Homer in depicting epic landscapes with heroes wary of the shortness of life?

Not only is Leone my favorite filmmaker, but he’s also my favorite photographer. I’m a fine art landscape and portrait photographer, and Leone has inspired both my sweeping landscapes and intimate portraits:

s it any wonder that Leone stated that Homer was the best writer of Westerns, and that Achilles, Agamemnon, Odysseus, and Ajax were the original cowboys? Is it any wonder that Thomas Jefferson stated they all fall off, one by one, until one is left with Virgil and Homer, and perhaps Homer alone? Is it any wonder that Homer mentored Virgil who in turn lead the exiled, Stoic Dante on down through hell, where Dante saluted Homer as being the greatest poet of all time? Is it any wonder that Socrates also looked to Achilles for courage in founding Western Philosophy and thus Western Science? Is it any wonder that Newton stated that he was good friends with Plato and Aristotle, but that his Greatest Friend was Truth, or that Stoics such as Epictetues, Aurelius, and Seneca referenced Socrates and Homer hundreds of times? Is it any wonder that Goethe celebrated the sublimity of Homer and stated that epic poetry is the true father of science, or that Einstein had a bust of Goethe in his office at Princeton?
