Freak storm in South AfricasteemCreated with Sketch.

Yesterday was such a calm day, nice and sunny, but we were expecting some rain in the afternoon/evening. Well I knew it was going to rain just looking at the sky and the general weather pattern that we have.

I was sitting in my room and it got really dark. I looked outside my window and there it was, a huge monster hanging in the air just above me. But it hadn't started to rain yet, but a few moments later hail started to fall.

Lucky for us it was not huge... or so I thought... there was a sudden pause in the rain and hail followed by huge hail stones that left many holes in the roofs of houses near by.

After a while it had been hailing so much that it started to look like snow had fallen on the ground. My poor plants were destroyed and well anything that was standing outside was destroyed.

But this was not the bad part, a few Km's away a tornado had formed. Yes that is right a tornado in SA??? But that wasn't the shocking part, this tornado had formed in our area that has many hills and mountains. This left me confused.

This is some of the devastation it left:

Funny thing is we had no weather warnings of this massive destructive storm. We were lucky enough to be right on top of a hill and somehow the biggest hail never hit us, but a few blocks away it did.

Freaky right?

Sweet pictures, that hail is crazy, scary when it's that big.

I always visit your blog because you inspires me. Do what you do. Thank you very much for sharing inspiring content.

I live in Oklahoma - ever seen the movie "Twister" from 1996? Yeah that's about the place I live. We grow up learning how to read the clouds. We even get in our cars and chase storms like this for fun.

But this is REALLY COOL!!! While I realize that with the right conditions a tornado can form anywhere, I had never thought of South Africa.

BTW, here's a pic I took of a storm just 6 months ago. No tornado, but some strong wind.

Wow this is a really cool picture.

Incredible what mother nature can do hey! impressive pictures! I live in the south of the U.K and we never experience storms like this, however I've recently uploaded our worst storm, not on this level but the footage is quite something , feel free to check it out Was very cold and had to be extremely aware of my surroundings but was worth it to get the shots.

My heart really go out to the spoilt crops and the perforated roofs. Hail is what I do devastate me. Am sorry about the tornado too

Hey man.

Check some of the pics from the storm on my post .

Very good post @dragonslayer

OMG! World is changing! Please stay safe!

OMG Its horrible .its very dangerous

Stay safe... that huricane looks deadly.

Beautiful information and picture upload and sharing thanks my votes halp me pelese

Same exact thing happened twice the last 3 months here in Istanbul. Take a look at this:

And Istanbul is normally nothing like this. We don't have any oceans around and bizarre weather conditions happens a few times in decades. But now it's almost regular, it happens every 1-2 month. God bless and protect everybody effected by these disasters!

That's scary!! Be safe out there

Good grief that is hectic at least your fine, and we so desperately need the rain here in the Cape

that would be ga narly - no doubt

GUYS THIS IS A LIE IM FROM SA THIS IS FAKE

I guess he is fake, everybody who lives in South Africa knows what happened today in Durban

Looks like a space ship.
Close Encounters of the 3rd kind.

Ohhhhhhh v sad @dragonslayer109, about that kind of freaky storm, heavy hailing destroy everything.. Anyhow very nice shots taken by you,,. Take care, thanks,

Oh My God Its horrible & very dangerous. My best wishes are always with you @dragonslayer109 !

the storm looks scary and beautiful at the same time, those hail storms are deadly especially the big one , they cause the most damage on property and agriculture

I'm always vote, and reply your post...

OMG! Unbelievable. Just like scenes from the movie "The Day After Tomorrow".
Global warming is coming...

Is that kind of storms happen all the times in South African?

No this is very rare. SA is normally calm when it comes to natural disasters image

Lol ...@2cptcrusty I love your sarcasm

Oh yes they flooding down there :D

I live in an area which for one or other reason the storm missed and 2 km further the trees and walls were blown over - but I could see the storm going on, it was quite scary -

So scary! Stay safe! Followed

Oh my gosh, that looks pretty scary and terrible. I hope no one was hurt and people were able to take cover safely. Without any warning at all, wow the weather must have shifted a great deal and left a lot of damage. Stay safe.

Definitely freaky, I drove home from OR Thambo airport, and was lucky enough to miss almost everything!! No damage to my car, just had a few small hail stones along the road.

damm looks freaky :O

It was crazy... glad you are ok, my heart goes out to the homeless...

is the first one is real?

Very freaky! Hail is scary enough, but tornadoes are even worse! Yikes! Stay safe my friend!

That's some nice icy hailstorm, could be dangerous to be caught outside in this type of rain. Wow

Yes I was taking a video when I got hit on the leg and now I have quite a big bruise.

Sorry, you should get it treated. We hardly have hail storms here. Just the regular rains.

Beautifull yet terrifying at the same time!

Wow, thats crazy. Hail syones look huge.

FREAKY

Not to be insensitive, and I'm sorry about the damages but that first picture is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Nature can be as dangerous as she is beautiful sometimes.

Keep safe guys

It happened last year as well in July and in 2014. Again the pressure of the water flowing down my drive way, tore up the upper tar layer.

Goosh
A tornado in Africa?
First time seeing and hearing this.
Hope it subsides
Meanwhile in Nigeria we hardly see storms..

Wooo ...this is serious...nice one dere @dragonslayer109 resteeming

That was one crazy storm, hail as big as tennis balls hit one of my friends houses. Caused huge damage and there car is a write off

Dam I guess you stay near my area?

I stay in the Sandton area, but my friend stays in Krugersdorp. Where do you stay?

In Krugersdorp :D

@dragonslayer109 That is a really bad aspect on the terms of the weather forecast and news outlet of South Africa...I hope everyone is safe, cause its incidence like this and lack of detailed information that leads to lose of life on this beautiful planet we call Earth...I love your writeup, so I just followed you.

The same thing has happened in Durban today, no tornado but extreme flooding

I love a good storm. Don't like to see damage, but the spectacle of it all is a thrill.

I was visiting family on a mountain when it happened.
The hail broke the pool pump. It was the loudest hail we have ever heard before. It felt like the roof was going to break.

There were bigger hail stones falling but they broke as they landed. Like tennis ball big. It was crazy. Little did we know what was happening just over the next hill.
