As much as I'd like to think that Epic Games are offering viable competition with their store, I'm starting to realise they're effectively brute-forcing using money; what they have to offer as a platform (at least currently) pales in comparison with what Steam offers. Then, of course, you have the anti-consumer "bribes" being used to give games 6+ months exclusivity on the EGS platform; there's a growing sentiment against this sort of behaviour, and from what I'm seeing, it's starting to come to a head with Borderlands 3, after what happened with Metro and Phoenix Point.
Additionally, you have the other platforms besides Steam, such as GOG and Humble, who are going to suffer as a result of this. I initially welcomed the competition that Epic brought with their store, but now I've changed my mind with regards to this because this is not actual competition; this is Epic throwing money around to get games onto their platform, because they decided that's the best way to go about things, rather than trying to match or exceed Steam on features, such as Linux support, or allowing reviews.
Additionally, I don't get this exclusivity stuff anyway; it was bad enough when consoles did it, but the PC is supposed to be an open platform; this is all too similar to what Microsoft wants to do with Windows and gaming; they want people to use their store, and no one else's... how is that consumer-friendly, and how will the 6 month exclusivity to the EGS be consumer-friendly as well?
I'll still have an EG account (2 in fact), especially if I want to play Fortnite on occasion, but that doesn't mean that my above feelings/thoughts will stop! Either way, I'll definitely be watching things as they unfold...
