Eloim cradled Alexia and he looked around the room. By the fireplace, a priest had just lit a taper and now began to light the circle of candles around them. “Alexia, where are we?” Eloim asked. “What’s wrong with you?”
“The Alexia ring, I can feel it’s power,” she gasped. “It dragged me to the ring all those centuries ago when it was created. Someone has repeated the spell, this time it dragged me from Purgatory, my beloved. Its power is so strong, I can feel it pulling me still, unravelling me.”
“What can I do?” Eloim asked; his panic rising.
“Nothing my beloved, for my body is already dying. The touch of a wraith is fatal to the flesh. My body will crumble and my spirit will be absorbed into the ring and join with my younger self, from an earlier time.” Alexia whispered, pushing a small velvet pouch into his hand.
Already, she seemed to be fading before Eloim. “It is a crystal of Uruk. It was the witch’s payment for finding you. It will give you great power,” Alexia said, smiling up at Eloim.
Eloim looked around in desperation, the priest was half way around the circle, lighting the candles. “But what am I to do? You can’t disappear on me Alexia, tell me how to help?” Eloim said in desperation.
“My beloved Eloim, we cannot stop what is happening.” Alexia’s voice was growing quieter as she began to fade. “I will not remember you, my vampire love, not the next time we meet. What is left of who I am will be absorbed by the ring and nothing of our love will remain.” Alexia gave a final smile. “I did love you, vampire, even such a powerful ring as you wear would not control me. It just revealed to me the truth of my feelings. It helped me accept my love for you. I know you didn’t love me the same way, but would you say you did, just once before I go?”
“I really like you Alexia, but I’m so young, I don’t know. Plus I don’t think my parents would approve, but only because they never really got to know you.” Eloim looked down as the last of Alexia became a mist that floated from his grasp. “Please Alexia, don’t leave me, I need you,” Eloim whispered. “I’m sure if we had more time together I would have known that I loved you.”
The mist swirled around him and then, rather than going to the Alexia Ring on the floor, it entered the ring of Helen of Troy on his hand.
Looking up, he saw the priest had reached the final candle. With the speed only his kind could manage, he grasped the man’s wrist, just before he lit the candle.
“For a demon that killed my sister, I got to really like her you know. She was talking about getting married but I wasn’t sure, I didn’t know if I was old enough for that sort of commitment,” Eloim said to the priest who froze in shock at having a vampire face inches from his own.
Standing up, Eloim dragged the priest upright and forced him backwards. As he walked out of the circle, kicking over the last unlit candle, he said; “Then again, she was really sexy, had the whole warrior demon thing going on. Let me tell you that being crushed against her like that is one thing I won’t forget in a hurry. I didn’t know where to put my face, so just left it where it was and enjoyed the ride. There was also that kiss. I’m going to really regret not having the chance to do that again. Now where was I?” Eloim asked himself. “That’s it, now that I’m back, first thing I need is a new outfit, so tell me where I am so I can choose a shop to visit.”
“London,” stammered the priest, his eyes wide with fear.
“Excellent, a special fashion week was about to start in London to mark some human event or other, so loads of top designers and the latest styles are all here in the city. Now, how long have I been gone?” Eloim said with a smile.
“What? I don’t understand.” The priest asked, confused.
“What’s the date? Has fashion week finished? I really lost track of time in that place,” Eloim spoke as though talking to a fool.
“It’s Saturday September the first, the year of our lord, sixteen sixty six.” The priest replied.
To be continued.
Poor Eloim - as much as he can be frustrating, there is something rather endearing about him as well. I can't help but like him, lol. I've been taking a few days to spend with friends for my birthday, so have missed a few posts - I'll try to catch up in the next couple of days.
